Our team:
The Building Engineering Trades are an integral part of maintaining and improving the core systems of the architectural structures on campus. These Electric, HVAC and Plumbing shops provide a range of services to academic, research, library and special University facilities which include the following:
24 Hour Emergency Response
Routine Maintenance
New System Design & Installation
Repairs & Alterations to Existing Systems


Job responsibilities:

  • They diagnose problems independently and may at times schedule their own work and determine work priorities.
  • They perform work planning for complex projects and may direct the work of other electricians.
  • Employees in this classification may also be responsible for working on various specialized electrical systems and equipment; for example, performing installation, operations and maintenance functions in alarms and control systems and/or electrical cable, and other specialized electrical gear Electrician Specialists perform these specialized duties under general supervision from the Shop Supervisor.
  • Employees in this classification are responsible for working on electrical systems and equipment with minimal technical assistance from a lead or supervisor.

Characteristic Duties
The duties listed under this section are designed to provide a representative sampling of key tasks and/or responsibilities associated with the job. They are not intended to be a complete list of all the duties performed by employees in the classification.

  • May service and test circuit breakers.
  • Enter data and maintain database of preventive maintenance and drawings or schematics
  • May coordinate and support outside vendors and contractors.
  • Lay out, install and troubleshoot industrial and motor control circuits involving relays, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and other industrial control components and systems.
  • Perform estimates and detailed scope of work for complex new or updated electrical systems and equipment.
  • May work alone, or give direction, instruction or assistance to other Electrician Specialist, Electrician Maintenance or other maintenance persons.
  • Install, maintain, or repair variable frequency drives, Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and generator systems.
  • Work on and maintain electrical power distribution systems under 600 Volts AC/DC including motor control centers.
  • May perform any of the duties described in the Electrician Maintenance specification or other duties as assigned.

Qualifications -
The Electrician Specialist must have sufficient experience in a wide variety of electrical work to work independently, without assistance, most of the time and give direction, instruction and support to others. They must have demonstrated this ability to work independently in previous work assignments at a skill level equivalent to the Electrician Maintenance classification. Understanding of, and willingness to comply with, electrical and work safety procedures including National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards. For Electrician Specialist who must possess relevant specialized knowledge according to the area of specialization, they may be required to have experience in electronic controls, relays, switches, and devices including interpretation of electronic schematics; or they may need to be experienced in industrial cable splicing, or other specialized area. In general, they must have the ability to make repairs on equipment encountered, to diagnose electrical trouble, and to make new installations working on specialized equipment and electrical systems. This level of knowledge is generally associated with a minimum of 7-8 years of work experience, with several years spent working in an appropriate specialized area, and/or in special training. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and a good driving record. Must be available to work overtime and available for callbacks.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to works on or uses boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes and forklifts to perform duties.
  • Ability to wear and work in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including such items as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs) hard hats, respirators and full body suits
  • May be exposed to radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise>80db TWA, allergens, biohazards, chemicals, asbestos, hot and cold temperature extremes.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and work at elevated surfaces at heights over ten feet.
  • Ability to works on or uses boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes and forklifts to perform duties.
  • Rarely perform desk based computer tasks, use a telephone, write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, scrub, sweep and lift 21–50 pounds.
  • Required to wear appropriate uniform.
  • Frequently grasp forcefully, perform light/fine grasping, lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Constantly stand/walk, lift up to 10 lbs.
  • May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including such items as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs) hard hats, respirators and full body suits.
  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
  • Occasionally perform seated work, knee/crawl, climb, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach, lift, pull, work above shoulders, operate hand and/or foot controls
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non commercial Class license.

The expected pay range for this position is $47.35 (Step 1) to $57.33(Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
