The hiring range is $25.66 - $29.51 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Public Services Librarian responds to the needs of the community through the provision of education, information and use of library resources.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Public Services Librarian series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Public Services Librarian, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Completes system-wide committee duties in the areas of family programming, teen advisory, and grants.
  • Participates in supporting library initiatives through effective displays, contributing to the library system’s online presence, and supporting marketing efforts.
  • When assigned to Outreach and Engagement, will actively pursue and promote outreach opportunities and collaborate with team on community engagement and communication efforts.
  • Provides assistance to patrons; locates library materials; answers reference questions; assists patrons with using library programs and technologies.
  • Assists with logistics concerning sharing resources with other buildings.
  • When assigned to Library Technical Services, also catalogs items and selects materials. May catalog foreign language items.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
  • Assists patrons with complaints, concerns and research requests.
  • Performs circulation duties and participates in collection maintenance and management.
  • Develops and presents programming and classes for all ages.

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent exercises discretionary judgment in interpreting and implementing departmental guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Basic library functions and practices; reference techniques and materials; social media and blogging; community demographics and needs; early childhood development.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; establishing performance measures for professional staff; conducting research with the use of various resources; providing guidance and instruction to others; demonstrating initiative, effective judgment, accuracy, and flexibility; operating a personal computer using standard office equipment and software, utilizing Windows and Apple operating systems, and integrated library systems; accessing social media sites; working independently and as part of a team.

Education: Master’s degree in Library Science accredited by the American Library Association required.

Experience: One (1) year of professional library experience. When assigned to Library Technical Services, preference will be given to Librarians with cataloging experience.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements

Licenses and Certifications: None.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Work is performed throughout the library with standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 30 pounds, or heavier with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and some exposure to dust/mites Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
