Job Description

Overall responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the content team - empower them to be creative, instill a sense of ownership and pride in what they produce, and take initiative to better the department
  • Act as protector of all content, both main site and client, ensuring the highest quality and integrity
  • Maximize content lifespan and value
  • Execute vision for all content produced by Mainland - main site and client
  • Oversee management of contractors


Specific tasks

  • Act as protector of all content, both main site and client, ensuring the highest quality and integrity
  • Use software to conduct research on web traffic and keywords to implement into editorial calendars
  • Operationalize content procedures to be as efficient and error-free as possible
  • Work with AMs to implement process for oversight on client content
  • Research and establish content ideas/themes
  • Establish and enforce KPIs
  • Lead and mentor the content team
  • Execute vision for all content produced by Mainland - main site and client
  • Mentor individual writers and editors to improve and professionally develop
  • Work with managing editor to oversee team workloads, assign content and manage priorities
  • Implement auditing procedures to regularly review all publications for errors
  • Work with digital to create a streamlined process for maximizing the lifespan of content, i.e. creating videos to accompany articles, customized imagery, etc.
  • Create ideas for elevating content and making it more engaging
  • Write and edit major content pieces when needed, i.e. major cover stories, assessments, etc.
  • Secure sources for major stories and create a system for consistent outreach
  • Oversee editing, including supporting at times.
  • Manage source book
  • Maximize content lifespan and value (mostly for main site)
  • Create and maintain editorial calendars for Mainland publications to include written articles and videos
  • Work with digital to establish regular reporting/auditing process to monitor web traffic, highlight successful content and identify gaps in content strategy
  • Create and maintain reporting structure for content team to communicate with leadership about ongoing efforts


First 6 Weeks

  • Create plans for new processes and ideal optimization of the team
  • Meet with team as a group and individually to hear feedback on current processes
  • Inform team of upcoming changes
  • Review current editorial calendars and see what needs to be done to get ahead
  • Sit in on team meetings to get a “lay of the land”
  • Identify largest gaps from previous weeks’ auditing
  • Off to the races!
  • Weeks 5 and 6: Implement and Operationalize
  • Weeks 3 and 4: Plan
  • Weeks 1 and 2: Audit
  • Implement plans and processes created in weeks 3 and 4
  • Review state of client content to ensure team is still working far enough ahead
