Job Description
The Department of Learning and Engagement at The Museum of Modern Art supports the Museum’s founding educational mission to ensure that people of all ages and abilities “enjoy, understand and use” the art of our time in ways that add value to their lives. The department collaborates across the organization to empower a diverse public to form their own interpretations and connections to art by telling stories, asking questions, actively making and participating in the artistic process, and offering and listening to multiple perspectives. Programs offered by the department range from artist-driven activations to classes, online courses, studio programs, facilitated gallery explorations, workshops, publications and more.


The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Director within the Learning and Engagement Department. The Director, Young Learners works as part of a team to provide a wide range of facilitated experiences and discursive programs for adults both inside and outside of the Museum. Programs will often connect to the museum exhibitions and collection and use a range of strategies to engage adult audiences with art. These include but are not limited to artmaking and writing, conversation, close looking and facilitated discussion, workshops, performance, with a focus on the power of art and artist to effect individual and social transformation.


Specific Responsibilities Include


  • Develop annual department budget that reflects MoMA department priorities and monitors income and expense lines.
  • Manage and cultivate an extensive network of educational partners in the community and beyond, helping advance cooperative programs with area schools, from K-12 to colleges and universities, while furthering collaboration with peer arts organizations and agencies.
  • Develops curriculum for learning specialist training and staff professional development. Present talks or secure speakers and presenters as needed for training sessions.
  • Lobe Marketing/Promotion. With marketing and strategic communications team, develop and help implement marketing efforts for museum learning programs. Other tasks include: refresh content and update department events on MoMA website. Ensure staff keep educator and family email lists up to date. Responsible for E-Newsletters for teachers and special audiences.
  • Oversee the functionality of all division processes including staff scheduling, project management timelines, budget tracking and maintenance.
  • Provide monthly reports and other reports and statistics as requested, provide information and support for grant applications and advancement initiatives, participate in institutional planning/initiatives.
  • Supervise department staff including School, Teacher, Family and Youth Programs, Learning Specialists and operational support staff. Conduct annual staff performance reviews.
  • Lead the development of programs that align with departmental priorities and help young learners enrich their lives through meaningful educational and personal connections with works of art.
  • Demonstrate initiative in continually researching and addressing strategies for integrating new modes of engagement and best practices into programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate MoMA Learning programs with a view to updating, improving and refining offerings on a regular basis.
  • Provide direction and support as needed for department initiatives including: tours programs; adult programs; teacher/school programs and resources, family programs; teen programs, policies and programs; interactive gallery and offsite outreach initiatives/exhibitions.
  • Work with other members of the L&E team to analyze results of audience research and education visitor demographics in strategizing on how to best serve the MoMA community.
  • Seeks opportunities to collaborate with other cultural and community organizations across New York to expand and diversify the museum’s audience, extend the museum’s reach, and advance the MoMA’s mission and interests.


Requirements


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work well and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences including staff, volunteers, educators, funders, sponsors, members, general public and other constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to values of diversity, inclusion and learner-centered interpretation strategies.
  • Minimum of 5 years proven leadership experience in a museum setting is required along with understanding of the role of education in a museum and best practices in the museum education field.
  • Experience supervising personnel (volunteer and staff), program and budget development, project management and planning skills along with an ability to meet deadlines are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Masters degree in Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies or Fine/Studio Arts along with sound knowledge of art history, museum teaching and object interpretation strategies.
  • Able to work effectively in a team setting within the department and collaborate across the organization.


Salary: The salary range for this position is $100,000 - 120,000 per annum.
