Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Director of Team Security. The Director, Team Security for the Phoenix Suns & Phoenix Mercury basketball organizations is a vital role responsible for ensuring the strategic safety and security of the team, players, staff, and spectators. This role is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive security strategies and protocols to mitigate potential risks and maintain a secure environment focused on basketball team and player operations in market and on the road. This position requires a high level of expertise in security management, crisis response, and risk assessment.
What The Director Of Team Security Will Do
  • Emergency Response Planning: Develop and implement emergency response plans to handle various scenarios, such as medical emergencies, natural disasters, and security breaches. Conduct regular drills and training sessions with travel party and basketball operations personnel to ensure preparedness and coordination among security personnel and relevant stakeholders.
  • Threat Assessment and Intelligence: Partner with arena security team to monitor and analyze relevant security intelligence, including potential threats to the team, players, or staff. Stay updated on emerging security technologies and trends to proactively identify and address security challenges.
  • Compliance and Legal Requirements: Stay knowledgeable about local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and industry standards related to security. Ensure compliance with all applicable requirements and take appropriate measures to address any potential security or legal risks.
  • Has flexibility to travel full time with the team in season.
  • Physical Security Management: Partner with the Director of Security for Suns/Mercury venues on implementation and maintenance of physical security measures, such as access control systems, surveillance systems, perimeter security, and emergency response protocols.
  • Incident Management: Respond promptly and effectively to security incidents, including but not limited to crowd control, unruly behavior, trespassing, and medical emergencies. Direct and coordinate security personnel to ensure appropriate actions are taken to maintain safety and minimize disruption.
  • In tandem with the health and performance staff, ensure all components of player uniforms, warmups, performance gear and footwear are set up appropriately.
  • Liaison and Collaboration: Serve as the primary basketball security liaison with law enforcement agencies, venue security, and other external stakeholders to coordinate security efforts and share information to mitigate issues while optimizing fan, team and player experiences. Foster strong working relationships with players and basketball staff to facilitate effective communication and collaboration during security incidents or potential threats.
  • Ability to support with additional team needs as they arise.
  • Personnel Management: Recruit, train, and team security managers responsible for each team’s travel party, player and staff protection, and overall strategy for team security. Coordinate schedules and assignments to ensure adequate coverage during practices, games, and other team-related events.
  • Security Strategy Development: Develop and implement a comprehensive security strategy, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), after action reports and process improvements that aligns with each team’s objectives and ensures the safety of all team staff involved.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities during all aspects of team activity (global/domestic travel, hotels, arena, practice facility). Evaluate existing security measures and recommend improvements to address any identified gaps.

  • In-depth knowledge of security technologies, access control systems, surveillance systems, and emergency response protocols.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with internal stakeholders, external agencies, and the public.
  • Exhibits a high ability to take initiative, constructive feedback and be solution oriented.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by team events and schedules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with other departments and stakeholders.
  • 10+ years of experience in a similar role, preferably in professional or collegiate sports organization
  • Required to work flexible hours and travel, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices in security management.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a diverse team of security personnel.
