The Department
The Washington County Department of Housing Services was formed in 1992 to administer housing activities and programs for the County and the Housing Authority. The department offers rental assistance to low-income households through various federally funded programs, creates affordable housing opportunities in the community for low- and moderate-income households through a combination of creative financing and partnerships with public and private entities and administers programs to address homelessness.

The work of Washington County Department of Housing Services is unique and exciting in many ways, including:
  • In 2021, Washington County was awarded MTW status, a designation given to less than 5% of housing authorities across the country. MTW allows the housing authority to create flexible and distinctive programs and policies that are best-designed to fit our community.
  • We administer the Washington County portion of the Metro Affordable Housing Bond, a groundbreaking regional measure approved by the voters in 2018. The Metro Bond brought over $100 million dollars in new funding to increase affordable housing development.
  • The Supportive Housing Services measure funds up to $250 million dollars to the region annually and around $70 million to Washington County. This innovative funding is enabling Washington County to make advanced strides in addressing homelessness in our community.
