Job Description

Who We Are

United States of Care (USofCare) is a non-partisan non-profit organization on a mission to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need, or income. We champion fair and commonsense policy changes to meet people’s urgent needs: the certainty that their health care will be affordable, that their coverage will be dependable and there when they need it, that their health care is personalized, and that the system is easy to understand and navigate.

In order to achieve our people-centered mission, USofCare has developed highly intentional organizational values and we are committed to building a diverse team at all levels of our organization, cultivating an inclusive culture, and engaging with people who bring different perspectives and lived experiences to our efforts. Our values are how we work internally and externally, what we hold up and celebrate, and what we are constantly striving for and aspiring to be as an organization. View our values at unitedstatesofcare.org/who-we-are.

In building our team, at every level we value and prioritize inclusion and diverse perspectives. Seeking unity over uniformity, we pay attention to the diverse interests, abilities, needs and backgrounds of every employee and strive to create an environment where everyone is heard and feels that they belong. We strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and communities to apply to join our growing team.

Position Overview and Responsibilities

United States of Care (USofCare) seeks an experienced Director of Events & Experiences to advance our mission, elevate our people-centered brand, and amplify our impact through the design and strategic implementation of in-person and virtual events nationwide. USofCare recently celebrated our 5-year anniversary and, as we look to the next 5 years and beyond, it is a top priority to increase the breadth and scale of our events programming in line with other cross-cutting strategies.

The Director of Events & Experiences will play a key role in USofCare’s programmatic strategies, brand building efforts, and network impact initiatives, and will work closely with the Executive Team as well as leadership from across departments. Both a visionary and an implementer, the Events Director will be responsible for creating a cohesive events strategy that ties together the goals and core values of the organization with programmatic priorities and key policy initiatives. While the Director of Events & Experiences will be a strategic thinker, it is crucial that they are also a ‘doer,’ as they’ll be responsible for executing the events programming with a high level of collaboration, professionalism and excellence.

A successful Director of Events & Experiences will be entrepreneurial and creative with proven leadership and project management skills. This leader will be highly self-motivated and will build an annual events calendar that advances programmatic, policy, and organizational goals, and will carry all events through to implementation with minimal management and internal resources. The Director of Events & Experiences will be responsible for planning and executing multiple virtual and in-person events at any given time and will need to seamlessly pivot between competing priorities while maintaining clear communication and bringing along key internal and external stakeholders as needed.

USofCare’s event portfolio includes keystone events; conferences; convenings for media, elected officials, state partners, and policy makers and/or legislators; Hill briefings; activations at partner events; and smaller events like webinars, trainings, and board meetings. The Director of Events & Experiences will manage this dynamic portfolio with a keen eye to all sectors of our network from key stakeholders and donors to policy makers, elected officials, legislators, advocates, patients, and researchers. In collaboration with the Development team, the Director of Events & Experiences will create and execute sponsorship strategies and take a hands-on role in working with event sponsors to support a new events revenue stream.

The Director of Events & Experiences does not manage any direct reports or have a team beneath them, but will provide oversight to event vendors, will manage budgets, prioritize competing needs, and – like all staff at USofCare – will be expected to foster an inclusive working environment. With a no problem too big and no detail too small approach, the Director of Events & Experiences will wear multiple hats in this dynamic position.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must have a strong commitment to ensuring everyone has access to quality, affordable health care, and have a dedication to operating in a diverse, bipartisan, learning atmosphere that explores multiple policy solutions to achieve our mission. You are willing to respect different points of view, and are committed to applying an equity lens and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in all your work.

  • Proven track record of taking an event from creative conception to execution, securing the necessary buy-in from internal and external stakeholders as necessary along the way. You are a visionary strategic thinker, but also thrive as a project manager and in execution, and can assume both roles seamlessly by balancing innovation and creativity with the ability to organize in order to get the work done. You are energized by creative problem solving, and know when and how to escalate problems to a supervisor.
  • You are entrepreneurial, collaborative, creative, and highly self-motivated, with experience driving excellence with limited support and oversight.
  • 8+ years of professional experience in the nonprofit and/or advocacy space, and a minimum of 6+ years directly designing and managing an organization’s portfolio of annual events programming (200-6,000 person events), including specific experience with event sponsorship strategy, design and vision, budget management, and vendor oversight.
  • You have developed sponsorship strategies that drive event revenue, and are knowledgeable about how to build and track toward an event budget.
