BCPS Director of Elementary Education
Supervised by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Salary Range: $109,620-$114,071
Job Summary:
The Director of Elementary Education is a critical lever in improving student achievement. The
Director cooperates with other district administrators in providing strategic direction and implementing
systemic improvement initiatives. The Director of Elementary Education is responsible for the
development, support and administration of elementary and early childhood programming, including
early childhood special education. In addition, the Director of Elementary Education plans and
provides professional development for elementary principals as well as elementary and early
childhood staff. The role of the director is to move elementary education improvement efforts forward
toward the accomplishment of Board and District goals.
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in elementary education, curriculum and instruction, or educational
leadership.
LICENSE: Must hold a valid Michigan Administrator’s License and have a minimum of 5 years of
successful school administration (rated effective or highly effective).
EXPERIENCE: Five years successful experience implementing elementary and early childhood
educational programs. Evidence of 5-10 years of progressively more responsibility and experience in
classroom instruction, lead positions, curriculum development, and school administration within an
urban school district. Served at least five years as a building principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Responds to parent or staff concerns as needed to facilitate problem solving
- Participates in the recruiting, staff selection, and training and evaluation process of BCPS instructional staff
- Directs the planning and implementation of professional development opportunities for instructional staff
- Facilitates and coordinates efforts for elementary school reform in collaboration with TLS staff
- Maintains current knowledge of effective instructional strategies and practices that support and enhance program effectiveness
- Provides vision, direction, management and oversight for all aspects of the elementary and early childhood programs, including goals; budgets; Curriculum; student assessment;program evaluation; data collection and analysis; school improvement plans; compliance; and the selection, allocation, development and supervision of personnel.
- Ensures that all early childhood staff have the appropriate certification for their assigned roles based on state and federal certification guidelines.
- Ensures all early childhood licensure documentation is in compliance according to state and federal regulations.
- Provide strong, direct instructional leadership to the schools and the district.
- Develops positive relationships and initiates activities to maximize effective planning, programming, and cooperation among schools, district staff, the community at large, and institutions of higher education.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Plans, organizes, and implements PreK-5 summer programming
- Collaborates with TLS Directors, Curriculum Coordinator, Coaches, and Teacher Leaders
- Directly supervises, monitors, and evaluates elementary principals and other assigned professional staff

- Demonstrated success working in urban schools
- Demonstrated success in utilizing management skills, including success in critical thinking, and problem solving
- Demonstrated success at planning and organizing
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Knowledge of Improvement Science and Implementation Science
