Job Description

BROAD FUNCTION:

The Special Education Consultant will provide leadership and assistance to LEAs/PSAs in the development,

implementation, and evaluation of special education programs and services to ensure a free and

appropriate public education for students with disabilities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Provide technical assistance and support to LEA/PSA personnel in the implementation of federal

and state mandates and county procedures

 Remain current with federal and state compliance requirements

 Develop and implement professional development activities in support of special education

requirements

 Facilitate committees/workgroups as assigned

 Participate in the gathering, utilization, and analysis of data relative to special education and early

intervention

 Participate in compliance activities related to the delivery of special education programs and

services

 Provide technical assistance to parents and other community members concerning school district

and parent responsibilities in the special education process

 Participate in long-range planning for the delivery of special education programs and services

 Serve as liaison to LEAs/PSAs and related service agencies in the provision of coordinated services

to students with disabilities in both special and general education settings

 Assist with the coordination and monitoring of funded projects and programs

 Participate as an active team member in departmental and organizational projects as assigned

 Plan, use professional judgment and act effectively to carry out the function of this position within

the direction provided by Wayne RESA’s mission and goals

 Regular and predictable attendance

 Perform other duties as assigned

RELATIONSHIPS & CONTACTS:

INTERNAL

 Ongoing contact with Wayne RESA professional and support staff

 Work closely with organizational project team members and other Special Education Consultants

in the planning and provision of coordinated services to constituents

EXTERNAL

 Frequent contact with LEA/PSA special education directors and supervisors, special education and

general education teachers, principals, ancillary staff, and parents

 Ongoing contact with agency personnel, other intermediate school districts, and Michigan

Department of Education

 Participate on state-level committees to ensure representation of Wayne RESA and the Wayne

County LEAs/PSAs

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

 Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Early Intervention Services

 Manager of Special Education and Early Intervention Services

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

 Master’s Degree required

 Full approval in a minimum of one area of Special Education required

 Approval as a Director or Supervisor of Special Education preferred

Experience

 Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Special Education required

 Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience at the local or intermediate district level

preferred

 Demonstrated experience in interpreting and implementing special education rules and regulations

required

Special Skills and Training

 Demonstrated knowledge of recent trends in special education and their impact on the special

education community required

 Demonstrated experience in developing collaborative, general, and special education programs

required

 Demonstrated ability to work effectively with WRESA staff, parents, and district personnel required

 Demonstrated consultation, training, group facilitation, and process skills required

 Demonstrated skill working with diverse populations required

 Demonstrated listening, verbal, and written communication skills required

 Demonstrated organization and presentation skills required

 Demonstrated collaboration, team building, and problem-solving skills required

 Demonstrated ability to integrate emerging forms of technology into professional activities

required

 Proficiency in using the Microsoft Windows desktop operating system and Windows-based

software
