Mercy Ships is a global faith-based charity that uses hospital ships to bring safe, free, and affordable surgery and training to people in Africa. For over 40 years, Mercy Ships has visited more than 55 low- or middle-income nations. We're seeking a Director of Donor Offer Development and Foundations who will build and execute a long-term strategy for growth in the grant-making foundation sector and will develop donor offers for use by front-line fundraisers. The Director will craft and integrate a holistic approach to identifying funding opportunities with the high-wealth donor segment, corporations, and foundations in partnership with internal program leaders and fund management.

  • Leadership role within the division in bringing data and creative design together to create new offer materials and assets with guidance from Senior Director based on department strategic initiatives for growth.
  • Management and ongoing cultivation and engagement of existing portfolio of Foundation partners in addition to building a strategy for new supporters.

What's needed for this position:

  • Travel required 20 percent for partner meetings and events based on organizational guidelines for safe travel.
  • 8 + years of experience in fundraising, sales, marketing, or business communications.
  • Extensive computer skills with an ability to manage technology platforms for creative design (Adobe, PPT), financial/data (Excel), and donor management (Salesforce, DonorPerfect).
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
  • Experience budgeting, financial acumen, and managing fiscal procedures and practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, an aptitude for logical thinking, a commitment to professional ethics, and the ability to interact with development staff.
  • International travel will be required based on organizational needs and guidelines.
  • Experience working in nonprofit sector, social sector or corporate background, and managing sensitive and confidential information.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or other related area required.

What You Will Contribute:

GRANT MAKING

  • Track and maintain donor reporting requirements and appropriate submittals to defined donors. Maintain files of relevant information on prospective/actual foundation donors.
  • Manage and improve the process of receiving, processing, and acknowledging grant funds received.
  • Plan and prepare for briefings, visits, meetings, and stewardship opportunities.
  • Implement a strategic approach to mining our database and identifying high wealth prospects, corporate and grant making organizations to include strategies for cultivating, soliciting, recognizing and stewarding donors.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions. Attends/participates in Programs Inter-departmental Team meetings for program planning, review and improvement.
  • Manage the grant solicitation and submission process from start to finish with a high level of quality, detail, and strategic delivery. This includes coordinating Program Fund Management to evaluate degree of match between grant priority areas/needs with funding sources; ensuring that annual requests and required reports are submitted to foundation supporters; providing detailed research of new, prospective donors to expand options for programmatic and general funding.
  • With support from supervisor and assigned Agency partner, develop and execute a plan for growth in the Foundation Relations portfolio to increase revenue to support the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Maintain the dynamic grants calendar for applications and regular contact, along with all details of donor communication/interaction records in DPO.

DONOR OFFER DEVELOPMENT

  • Work with finance and program to secure detailed program and financial information to create donor offers. Will perform budget analysis to begin the process of reframing the budget into donor offers. Work on analytics.
  • A person of Christian character exemplifying qualities of honest, trustworthiness, initiative, creativity, tenacity, diligence and dependability.
  • Serve as a key liaison and a strategic hub for understanding Mercy Ship’s funding needs with foundations, corporations, and key VIP donors
  • On a case-by-case basis, provide training on creating donor offers with a goal of creating self-sufficiency in this area.
  • Work with program services to understand the societal problem that is addressed by each program of the organization; understand the cause of that problem; understand the solution to the problem that program services is applying; understand the outcomes of the application of the solution, i.e. a proof of performance answering the question: “does the solution really work?”
  • Using the information collected, creates donor offers, many in template, email and/or proposal form for use in all the fundraising strategies of the organization.
  • Meet with stakeholders to gather feedback on the effectiveness of donor offers.
  • Work with assigned Agency,Program, Finance personnel to produce donor offers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Work through Mktg and Global Brand to gather visual images/audio/stories to place the program services and offers into a human and emotional framework for donor consumption and adoption.

  • Creating timely reports that reflect performance.
  • Retention and upgrading of Grantmaker’s including cultivation of transformational gifts.
  • Securing project and organization information and creating and writing effective offers, proposals and asks. Regular and timely reporting back to the grantmaker.
  • Ability to qualify and disqualify Grantmakers including appropriate documentation.
  • Management and achievement of reasonable financial goals for each grant maker.
  • Development of a personal contact and ask plan, that takes into account the individual Grantmaker’s interest, motivations, giving patterns and ask and communication preferences.
  • Management of people, process, deadlines and budget while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization.

IN DONOR OFFER DEVELOPMENT:

  • Ability to manage time effectively in order to meet deadlines, yet be flexible enough to cope with diversity and complexity and be able to juggle several projects simultaneously.
