TITLE: Director of Development
DEPARTMENT: Development
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SALARY: $50,000-$55,000
Summary: This Director of Development will plan, develop, organize, supervise, and evaluate the success of fundraising that furthers the mission of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM). Major campaigns include the endowment, operations, exhibits, planned giving, and funding historic preservation projects. The Director of Development will also help with events including the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Spirits in the Shaft, and various fundraising events. The Director of Development works with other staff members to develop grant applications and plan campaigns around major projects and operations. The Director of Development will also help successfully execute event planning with the Operations Manager. This position is new and evolving, so the Executive Director will depend on the Director of Development to help build more essential duties, responsibilities, and goals over time.
Essential Duties:Essential job duties for this position include the following items. Other duties must be performed as assigned or required.
▪Maintain and grow contact and donor lists.
▪Maintain and grow membership records and membership program
▪Write and submit grants on time.
▪Write and submit grant reports on time.
▪Develop fundraising campaigns, including a planned giving program
▪Work with the staff and board of directors to create annual fundraising goals
▪Develop donors, corporate sponsors, and the Board of Trustees.
▪Assist with social media and utilize Constant Contact for fundraising and promoting the work and mission of the organization.
▪Confer with outside event organizers and staff at event sites to coordinate details
▪Inspect event facilities for damage and to ensure they conform to requirements
▪Consult with other NMHFM staff and outside event organizers to determine objectives and requirements for fundraising events
▪Meet with other NMHFM staff, event planning committee members, and outside event planners to plan scope and format of events, establish and monitor budgets, review administrative procedures and event progress, and evaluate success through analysis of income, attendance, and positive PR
▪Review event billing for accuracy and monitor payments
▪Evaluate and select providers of services according to requirements
▪Arrange the availability of audio-visual equipment, displays, and other event needs
▪Plan and develop programs, agendas, budgets, and services according to requirements.
▪Explain and complete contracts and rental agreements with outside organizers of events using NMHFM facilities
▪Work toward continuous quality improvement
▪Stay current with changing technology, including software and event management programs
▪Uphold, support, and promote all company policies and procedures
▪Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Director of Development does not currently have supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the individual in this position must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills and ability required.
Education/Experience:
▪Bachelor’s Degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
▪Significant experience with computers, email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
▪Experience with events management, publishing, and graphics software preferred.
Language Skills:
▪Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
▪Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
▪Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
▪Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
▪Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
▪Ability to speak and understand Spanish preferred.
Mathematical Skills:
▪Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
▪Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
▪Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
▪Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
