Job Description
The Director of Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) is responsible for leadership in the administration, planning, implementation, and evaluation of counseling services. These services are provided to promote students’ personal development and psychological well-being and include individual and group counseling, outreach programming, training, consultation, crisis intervention, and assessment. This position involves supervision of professional and support staff, budget administration, and formulation of unit policies and procedures. The position reports directly to the Dean of Students and serves on the Dean’s Senior Staff with a dotted line report to the Dean of the College of Health, Education, and Human Services (CHEH).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Excellent management, budgetary, and leadership skills.
  • Dedication to growing in cultural competency and consciousness in working with and providing mental health services to communities of underrepresented populations.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Doctorate in psychology, counseling or a mental health discipline.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and maintain effective working relationships · Computer literacy and electronic records software experience.
  • At least five years of clinical experience in a university/college counseling center or related mental health agency; some experience in administrative work, preferably within a university counseling center.
Required Professional license or certificates:
  • Must be professionally licensed in a mental health field in Ohio and eligible to supervise others seeking licensure.
Preferred Qualifications Essential Functions and percent of time:
40%:
  • Supervises and supports the Associate Director in coordinating training experiences for CWS staff and trainees.
  • Provides effective and appropriate services by planning, organizing, and implementing new counseling, training, and educational prevention and outreach programs.
  • Provides vision and leadership in establishing and monitoring the scope and proactive direction for CWS, ensuring its operation is consistent with national standards of best practice.
  • Promotes communication within the unit by conducting regular staff meetings.
  • Ensures continuity of care by recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising CWS personnel.
  • Clinical supervision for non-credentialed staff operating under the supervisor’s license; Oversees CWS staff who provide supervision to non-credentialed staff.
  • Collaborates, interacts, and communicates with other departments of the University, particularly those in CHEH, to coordinate the services of CWS.
  • Actively participates in and contributes to staff planning and evaluation of services and staff performance.
30%:
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for after-hours follow-up regarding mental health emergencies.
  • Ensures that the needs of students are addressed in emergency situations by coordinating and/or providing crisis intervention services during office hours and after hours as needed.
  • Promotes students’ personal development and psychological well-being by providing counseling on an individual or group basis.
  • Supports the student experience regarding mental and emotional wellbeing by hosting health focused activities, coordinating an approved well-being initiative, and promoting monthly or quarterly health topics.
10%:
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Communicates the function and mission of the CWS by meeting with students, faculty, and administrative groups of the University and the greater community.
  • Oversees management and negotiation of contracts with external entities and programs, including but not limited to online mental health platforms, after-hours crisis support services, etc.
  • Provides input to other units of the University by serving on University committees; including but not limited to the Student Care and Concern Committee.
10%:
  • Compiles statistics for annual reports and other reporting requirements.
  • Monitors clinical records to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements for clinical records.
  • Responsible for the development and management of CWS policies and procedures while ensuring all relevant federal and state laws, ethical guidelines, and professional standards of care are met; ensures that CWS staff understand and comply with all policies and procedures.
  • Ensures financial responsibility of the unit by preparing the budget and supervising all expenditures.
10%:
  • Contributes to the overall success of CWS by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or the Dean of CHEH.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development seminars, attending training courses, and obtaining Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required by state licensing and regulatory boards.
