Job Description
Job Summary: Plans, develops, coordinates, maintains, improves and supervises the day-to-day Area Command communication operations with the purpose of improving both internal and public awareness and support for programs and services that advance the Army's mission; Provides the capacity to enhance evangelism, strengthen community relations, provide frequent accurate and improved public information, forge stronger media relations and partnerships, and in general, raise the standards of communications across the Area Command; Designs, develops and presents promotional materials using multi-media formats; Serves as primary liaison with print and broadcast media with regard to the promotion of Salvation Army events, services, disaster relief, etc; Develops and maintains an effective communication plan/strategy to manage the Army's image and address any adverse public relations events; Keeps internal and external audiences informed about Salvation Army activity during disaster and/or crises events; Oversees (and supervises support staff when applicable) multi-media communications including all web-based and social media stream.

Communication Strategy & Branding (40 %)
Plans, develops, coordinates, evaluates and improves the communication functions for the Area Command with a goal of increasing public awareness of, and support for, the mission of The Salvation Army.
Develop and direct branding, public relations, and marketing communications for the Salvation Army programs including the creation, preparation, and upgrading of promotional materials to include annual reports, brochures, newsletters, and programs.
Manage the overall marketing and communication plan integrating internal and external strategies to establish consistency in messaging and to deliver quantifiable results of increased community awareness.
Develop long range communication and integrated marketing plans identifying communication goals and objectives for the ensuing year.
Develops partnerships with Area Command department heads and program staff to identify mutually beneficial communications goals, resources, and strategies to raise internal and/or public awareness and support for individual departmental interests, services and needs.
Drive community engagement and develop relationships with corporate and community organizations.
Develop and maintain relationships with local and regional media, including TV, Print, and Radio.
Acquire, implement, and manage special media promotions designed to build awareness and to meet organizational objectives.
Public Information & Media Relations (30 %)
Write various articles and press releases in order to communicate and promote the service and progress of The Salvation Army in the community. Submit news and press releases of special Salvation Army events, meetings, and projects to the local media.
Participates in the creation, design, preparation and/or upgrading of promotional materials. This includes annual reports, brochures, newsletters, bulletins, videos, exhibit materials, websites, and programs for use at conventions, conferences, Salvation Army functions community ana/er-local—events.
Prepares internal and external news and press releases in both written and electronic formats.
Creates, maintains and updates media lists for all Area Command media outlets both traditional and emerging streams.
Serves as a spokesperson alongside the Area Command Officers to represent The Salvation Army in a professional and positive manner.
Attend Salvation Army events and special meetings in order to take photographs and writes articles for publication in The Salvation Army periodicals and newsletters.
Serves as lead in the Crisis Communication Team.
Serves as the Area Command Public Information Officer, PIO when required.
Digital Communications (30%)
Manages all aspects of the Area Command website and social media content administration; ensures uniformity to current Salvation Army web branding standards; ensures maintenance of websites and regular posting of news and information, location information updates and accessibility for authorized local users.
Plans integration of all TSA web sites within the Area Command (conforming to The Salvation Army's overall web strategies); conducts and enforces the stringent policing of those sites; monitors the ongoing maintenance and the consistent updating of the Area Command website; ensures the development of the Internet generally as a viable resource to advance of the Army's mission; ensures the provision of adequate communications.
Monitors information relevant to The Salvation Army with social media and determines official messages to post in order protect, support, or enhance the Army's image and mission. This includes the daily monitoring of activity and the management of appropriate social media accounts
Other Responsibilities:
Assists Area Commander and Development Director in planning and coordinating special events, annual civic events, and seasonal programs.
Assists the Development Director in performing long-range planning identifying goals and objectives for the ensuing year.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of Public Relations & Communications.
Knowledge of general principles and practices of effective media relations.
Knowledge of the general principles of marketing, branding, and promotional material development.
Knowledge of web design and content development as well as effective principles and practices of using the web as a vital communication channel both internal and external to the organization.
Knowledge of effective principles and practices for developing training and communication programs for internal and external participants.
Ability to manage other staff members (if assigned).
Ability to prepare effective printed materials for educational and promotional purposes.
Ability to prepare effective audio/visual materials for promotional and educational purposes.
Ability to present in public the history, development, and mission of the international Salvation Army.
Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.
Ability to plan, coordinate and evaluate promotional events.
Ability to administer a budget and monitor expenditures for compliance with the same.
Ability to prepare and maintains reports in an accurate and complete manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Relations, Communications or a related field is required
And
Three (3) years progressively responsible experience administering a variety of internal and external communications functions for a large organization.
Or
any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications:
Valid State Drivers License; CDL License a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to meet attendance requirements.
Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
Ability to speak before large groups in person, by radio, and television.
Ability to travel to various locations in order to participate in public meetings, conferences, and other events.
Working Conditions:
Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.
Work is ordinarily performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
Occasional Disaster site and mission field visits where extreme conditions could be experienced.
Work requires occasional travel within the Command as well as the occasional need to visit DHQ and/or Annual Territorial Community Relations and Development Conference.
