Job Description

The Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis Director of Communications and Community Relations is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to enhance the organization's reputation, build strong relationships with the community, and effectively communicate its mission and programs to various stakeholders. The Director of Communications and Community Relations plays a crucial role in advancing the non-profit organization's mission, promoting its programs, driving contributed revenue, and building strong relationships with the community.

Communications

  • Ensure consistent messaging and brand identity across all communication platforms.
  • Manage the organization's online presence, including the website, social media accounts, and online advertising.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as fundraising, program management, and advocacy, to align communication efforts and maximize impact.
  • Monitor media coverage and social media platforms to address misinformation or negative publicity promptly.
  • Develop compelling and engaging content, including written materials, social media posts, website content, and newsletters.
  • Develop a communications calendar.
  • Oversee the production of marketing collateral, such as brochures, annual reports, and promotional materials.
  • Develop and implement crisis communication plans to effectively manage and respond to potential reputational risks or emergencies.

Community Relations

  • Develop and implement community relations strategies to engage diverse stakeholders, including volunteers, donors, participants, and community partners.
  • Develop and nurture partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and influencers to enhance the organization's visibility and support.
  • In congress with Chief of Staff, manage media relations, including drafting press releases, organizing media events, and handling media inquiries.
  • Staff Manage CEO on community engagements and media appearances.
  • Organize and attend community events, conferences, and networking opportunities to promote the organization and build relationships.
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse group of audiences, using a high degree of emotional intelligence when communicating with such diverse audiences.
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists and pitch stories to secure media coverage for the organization's activities and achievements.

Strategic Planning

  • Manage the department's budget, allocating resources effectively to achieve communication goals.
  • Coordinate with senior management to align communications efforts with the overall organizational strategy.
  • Monitor and analyze relevant trends, issues, and developments to inform communications strategies.
  • Identify target audiences, key messages, and appropriate communication channels for effective outreach.
  • In congress with the CEO, develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the organization's goals and objectives.

Team Leadership

·Co-lead with peer director group.

·Serve as a positive example for staff in terms of best practices in the organization. At times, serve as a mentor to junior staff members.

·In congress with the CEO, develop an appropriate plan for hiring a writer/editor (in which we will revise when the timing is appropriate)

Education and Experience

·Minimum of 6 years proven experience in marketing, community relations, communications, or public relations, including a proven track record of success in an environment of similar complexity and/or related degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or equivalent.

·Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in/with non-profit organizations.

·Bilingual skills preferred.

·Proven ability to build reputable connections in the city of Indianapolis.

·Knowledge and understanding of internal controls and dedication to maintaining confidentiality.

·Ability to clearly communicate the mission of the organization both orally and in report form.
