Job Description
National Domestic Workers Alliance / Care in Action
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Job Title: Development Manager
Position: Full-Time FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports To: Deputy Development Director Salary: $77,000 - $79,327
Start date: April 24, 2023
Work Location: Flexible
Position Summary:
The National Domestic Workers Alliance is a 501c3 nonprofit that organizes domestic workers in the United States to advance respect, recognition, and labor standards. We work to guarantee labor protections for domestic workers by winning legislation at the state level, pushing for regulatory changes at the national level, through the International Labor Organization at the global level, and by elevating domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents 70+ affiliates and chapters in 20 states, as well as a growing digital network of 400,000+ workers nationally. Our aligned 501c4 organization, Care in Action, provides the tools, training, and community that working families need to make their voices heard at the ballot box and organize and advocate for respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections.
We seek a highly organized, analytical, and relationship-driven Development Manager to manage a portfolio of institutional funders and prospects, draft compelling written materials, and own the team-wide grant deliverables process for NDWA’s institutional fundraising. This person will serve a key role in efforts to grow multi-year, unrestricted revenue, and will additionally steward relationships with institutional funders and prospects supporting our culture change and policy initiatives. They will have an opportunity to learn about all aspects of our fundraising and breadth of programs, while working in an exceptionally mission-driven environment.
Reporting to the Deputy Development Director, the Development Manager will be responsible for writing proposals and for submitting timely and accurate reports for grant-funded projects within their portfolio, supporting the prospecting and solicitation of new institutional funders, and writing other institutional funder-focused content, as needed. This position will also help adapt these written materials for use with individual donors and family foundations. The right individual for this position will have meticulous attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a knack for translating the details of our complex, far-reaching programs into clear and compelling stories for funders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Contribute to attainment of team-wide prospecting goals by conducting proactive research to identify new potential funders for the portfolio and working with development leadership and program leads to create cultivation strategy for aligned prospects.
  • Develop written content to support program priorities and meet budgetary goals for unrestricted and program-specific support, including clear and compelling grant reports and proposals that combine data with strong storytelling, as well as organizational case statements, briefing decks, concept notes, questionnaires and application forms
  • Assist the Development Coordinator in the process of building out infrastructure for quality reporting on our work, such as our interdepartmental effort to build in centralized and coordinated systems for monitoring key organizational metrics (qualitative and quantitative)
  • With oversight and support from senior development leadership, steward a portfolio of key donors giving five and six-figure grants for general operating support and/or supporting culture change and policy campaigns.
  • Participate in other activities as needed, including organization-wide activities such as retreats, monthly meetings and staff study.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Assist with quick turnaround on content related to new opportunities for programs we are seeking to grow at NDWA, such as 1-2 paragraph summaries on our work
  • Build positive and collaborative inter-departmental working relationships across the Development team, program leads, and other NDWA staff to gather the necessary information for concept notes, proposals, and reports
  • Serve as a member of the Development Team to implement the overall fundraising and development plan for NDWA and Care in Action.
  • Manage a cross-entity grants calendar with 100+ annual written deliverables, collaborating with the full development team and external grant-writing consultants to maintain and improve systems which ensure that all external deadlines are met and materials are submitted in a timely manner
  • Travel Requirement: 10%
Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Google Docs and Google Sheets
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Deep sense of initiative, ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team, in a fast-paced, experimental organization
  • Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and women of color
  • 3-5 years previous employment experience in nonprofit development or related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated success in creating effective messaging and polished materials for external audiences, ideally including nonprofit grant proposals and reporting
  • Alignment with NDWA and Care in Action’s mission, vision, and values
  • Knowledge of CRM operations; Salesforce experience a major plus
Women, people of color, people with disabilities and LGBTQ people strongly urged to apply. Applications will only be accepted electronically. Please submit a cover letter and resume by April 15, 2023. This position will remain open until filled.
NOTE: This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by a labor union, and specific employment terms and conditions may be subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
