- Communicates and coordinates investigations with pathologists on difficult cases where complexities exist to include: dental records, lab tests, evidence, photographs, x-rays, reports and others as indicated.
- Identifies the deceased in a timely a manner through photographs, fingerprinting, dental records, and medical records, and through coordination with possible family members, the media, and missing person's networks.
- Develops reports of crimes, accidents, evidence, statements and the pathologist's findings and provides information to proper law enforcement personnel.
- Investigates deaths such as violent, suspicious, unexpected and unattended deaths and death scenes to determine cause and/or manner, and, if necessary, to recommend further medical and law-enforcement investigations and actions.
- Contacts other agencies such as SLED, works with the AFIS, toxicology, forensic pathologists and/or Medical Examiners, ICE and other agencies in gathering information pertaining to a victim.
- Identifies wounds, including entrances and exits, blunt trauma, sexual assaults, pattern injuries etc.
- Disposes of bodies and human remains, including certifying death certificates, giving authorization for cremations, and arranging for burial of unclaimed and unknown remains.
- Responds to scenes, takes photographs, interviews witnesses, performs a preliminary examination of the body, obtains fingerprints, and takes statements and toxicological specimens at death scenes in order to maintain integrity of evidence.
- Associate Degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or Health Care. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Possession of a valid State Driver's License indicating a clean DMV record.
- 1-2 years of experience in medicine or law enforcement; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work; and
- Take action in solving problems while exhibiting judgment and a systematic approach to decision making; identify the important dimensions of a problem, determine potential causes, obtain relevant information and specify alternate solutions that result in effectiveness.
- Utilize high level of conflict resolution skills with staff, community members, elected officials and all stakeholders.
- Embrace change and actively support all efforts to improve processes, increase cooperation, communication and collaboration between and among co-workers, departments, County officials, officials from other jurisdictions, the business community and the general public.
- Safeguard confidential information and use it or disclose it only as expressly authorized or specifically required in the course of performing specific job duties.
- Create positive energy in both individuals and groups to build high morale and group commitments to goals and objectives.
- Contribute to overall County effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating, as necessary, in assisting all other teams.
- Respond positively to a work environment that will change day-to-day, requiring quick departure from and re-organization of one's schedule.
- Demonstrate sound time-management skills by effectively or efficiently delegating, organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments on or before the designated deadline.
- Attentive to the County's standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all County policies and procedures ensuring that all work performed and all staff members meet those standards while exhibiting consistent treatment of all staff.
- Manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to operate tools
- Position requires travel within and outside of the County which imposes common travel hazards.
- Employee may be exposed to health and environmental hazards.
- Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, overnights and weekends. May be greater than 40 hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time.
- Work is performed inside and outside. Exposure to cold, heat and elements of weather and nature may be encountered.
