Dental Assistant - Preventive & Community Dentistry

Perform dental assistance to Preventive & Community Dentistry faculty, graduate students, and pre-doctoral students as they provide comprehensive dental care to patients. Department clinics include: The Geriatric and Special Needs Clinic (GSNC) which primarily provides dental services to physically, mentally and/or cognitively impaired adults, the faculty general practice (FGP) which provides care to general dental patients, and optional involvement with the Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit which provides comprehensive dental care to local nursing home residents. Duties

• Other duties as assigned
• Picks up, passes, and receives appropriate instruments for dental procedure being done.
• Assisting in areas under the department clinics, utilizing the full range of dental assisting
• Demonstrates professional behavior in interacting with others, recognizes and demonstrates appropriate ethical standards, maintains confidentiality
• May set-up and maintain portable dental equipment as needed on Geriatric Mobile Unit.
• Orders, organizes, and stocks in-date supplies
• Prepares and maintains dental operatory areas for patient treatment and laboratory area, using prescribed infection control procedures.
• Follows provider's instructions during any medical emergencies, performs CPR on patient, if needed.
• Exposes, mounts, and labels digital radiographs
• Loads cartridge and needle for practitioner's administration of local anesthetic and provides supportive physical restraint, if necessary.
• Manipulates dental materials, following prescribed directions.
• Records patients' oral and dental examination findings as verbalized by operators.
• Organizes patient delivery pre-set trays with appropriate instruments

Salary: $42,910.40 (Pay Grade: 08)
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm - May require occasional overtime.
An advanced starting salary may be possible based on exceptional qualifications.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements

• May require Expanded Functions (EF-1 and/or EF-2) based on specific needs assigned by provider.
• Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography. (QDA)
• No additional work experience beyond the requirements for this position.
• Successful completion of an CODA accredited dental assistance program or one year full time equivalency in chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry.
• Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners. (QDA)

Highly Desirable Qualifications

• Experience working with special needs patients and/or those who have medical, psychological, or behavioral health challenges, including the frail elderly

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience working with electronic health records
• Certified Dental Assistant
• Ability to communicate concepts effectively
• Expanded Function Certification
• 2 years dental assisting experience
