Workdays/Hours: Monday - Friday / 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
The City of Durham seeks a skilled and innovative Part-Time Cultural and Public Art Coordinator to help implement public art projects and support the operations of the City’s Cultural and Public Art Program.
This position supports the development and execution of public art projects for the City of Durham, which may include collaborations with other City departments, community agencies and/or cultural groups. Successful candidates will exhibit a high degree of professionalism, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and passion for continuous learning. This is a 30-hour (average weekly) position, with some responsibilities able to be performed remotely, and some in-person responsibilities, including travel to various project sites within Durham. Position requires some evening and weekend work.
ABOUT THE CULTURAL AND PUBLIC ART PROGRAM
The Cultural and Public Art Program affirms Durham’s rich cultural and arts heritage as part of what makes Durham neighborhoods thrive, attracts tourism, spurs business development, and brings the community together. The program seeks to bring cultural and public art opportunities into the everyday experience of Durham residents through delivery of culturally relevant programming. The program supports the Durham Cultural Advisory Board and its Public Art Committee, facilitates festival and special event funding, and invests in public art experiences citywide that illuminate Durham history and spark reflection and dialogue.
- Research artists, fabricators and art suppliers; order and maintain public art materials, equipment, and artworks.
- Review work items for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures; assist with developing and implementing recommendations to improve program processes.
- Support program staff by processing payments, updating websites, maintaining databases and online systems, and gathering, compiling, tracking, and monitoring a variety of data.
- Support public art related community organizations and establish community partnerships by communicating verbally and in writing with artists, cultural community stakeholders and the public as directed.
- Provide general logistical support to program staff, management, and volunteers.
- Assist Cultural and Public Art Program staff and management to plan and implement public art projects, events, workshops, and conferences.
- Organize and schedule meetings and serve as administrative support for committees.
- Support administrative processes associated with the Cultural and Public Art Program such as preparing reports, records, files, contracts, agenda items, communication and promotional materials, bid documents, applications, certifications, letters, and other documents.
- Associate degree or three-years of paraprofessional program support, logistical, and coordination experience "or" equivalent.
- Prior experience working with artists, cultural organizations, or event planning.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, social media, and video conferencing platforms.
- Four-year college degree.
- Bilingualism (English/Spanish) is a plus.
- Prior experience with cash handling, accounts payable/receivable, or contracts.
