Job Description
Nurse Practitioner in collaborative practice with physician(s) provides services to patients of DCH System. The NP will function autonomously in this role and will use his or her independent judgment along with the advice of the collaborating physician, as needed, to provide health care services for those patients in need of behavioral health services and others that are identified with the need for these services


  • Performs a wide range of assessments to and/or procedures under physician’s collaboration agreement.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement Program and Quality Initiatives.
  • Performs primary care services including assessment and diagnostic services including diagnosis of patient illness, through clinical evaluations and ordering diagnostic test as indicated, providing necessary treatment and follow up care.
  • Must be compliant with required yearly training.
  • Teaches, supervises and counsels patients and/or family members regarding educational needs appropriate to diagnosis, medication compliance, and follow-up care.
  • Writes appropriate medication orders as in accordance ABN Scope of Practice and the collaborating agreement and treatment protocol established by the supervising physician.
  • Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate and timely manner in the patient’s medical record.
  • Determines treatment plan(s) and actively participates in treatment plan development and treatment plan reviews in collaboration with the supervising physician
  • Orders and interprets daily laboratory and any other examinations as determined necessary by NP and Collaborating physician
  • Actively participates in treatment plan activities as set forth by the treatment team
  • Supports adherence to regulatory guidelines as set by State and Federal regulators.
  • Responds to all communication requests from staff caring for identified patients.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of practice management guidelines.
  • Conducts family meetings as set forth with collaborating physician to discuss patient care and identified treatment plan.

  • Master’s or higher degree in nursing and a graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner program
  • Identifies and reduces unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors and employees.
  • Recognizes and takes appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors and employees.
  • Performs essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors and employees.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Current Certified AL Registered Nurse Practitioner Licensure with Alabama Board of Nursing
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Prior experience working as a CRNP in a Behavioral Health setting is preferred
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  • Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills to interact with patients, coworkers and other visitors.
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.


Working Conditions


Ability to use medical supplies and equipment necessary to carry out the duties listed above.


Work is in a fast paced ambulatory setting. Must be able to work independently. Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support weight of 75 pounds in handling patients and medical equipment and supplies. Must speak English fluently and in understandable terms. Must possess an intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touching and finger dexterity. Must have the ability to concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in patient and/or clinic conditions. Possible exposure to communicable diseases.


Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job. Will share information only on a need to know basis for work purposes. Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this job has been determined based on job level and job responsibility within the organization. Computerized access to PHI for this job has been determined as described above and is controlled via user ID and password.
