Job Description
Pharmacy clinical informatics must collaborate with other healthcare and information technology professionals to promote the safe, efficient, effective, timely, and optimal use of medications. They contribute to the transformation of healthcare by analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating information and communication systems that improve medication-related outcomes and strengthen the pharmacist–patient relationship. The role of pharmacy informaticists’ revolves around their knowledge of pharmacy practice, safe medication use, clinical decision-making, and the improvement of medication therapy outcomes, combined with their understanding of the discipline of informatics and the technology systems used by the organization.


  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Information and knowledge delivery delivering medication-related information and knowledge throughout the clinical knowledge life cycle, from the point of knowledge generation through cataloging, embedding knowledge into the workflow, and measuring the usage and effectiveness of that knowledge. Provide expertise and management of pharmacy medication use with particular focus on clinical functionality, medication reconciliation, and medication ordering. Implement and maintain decision support tools for medication ordering in pharmacy and the CPOE system. Integrate workflow processes between various technology systems. Train physicians, pharmacists, residents and pharmacy technicians on various technology systems.
  • Three (3) years pharmacist experience working in a health system setting preferred. Informatics training preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills and abilities to deal effectively with all levels of personnel are necessary. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Compliance and Regulations - Has working knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy. Stays up to date with CMS and Joint Commission requirements related to medication, informatics and safety.
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Data, information, and knowledge management managing medication-related information while promoting integration, interoperability, and information exchange. Effectively receive and investigate issues reported by staff and physicians related to software and process/workflow to determine root cause(s) of problems/failures. Independently formulate and execute plans (s) to resolve reported problems. Monitor tasks and reported issues and facilitate communication between internal and external customers. Follow issues through to satisfactory completion.
  • Participates in informatics on-call coverage.
  • Practice analytics developing point-of-business analytic solutions for improving decision-making. Applied clinical informatics applying user experiences, research, and theoretical informatics principles to improve clinical practice and usability.
  • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
  • PharmD or Bachelor’s of Pharmacy degree required.
  • Current licensure as a pharmacist by reciprocity or examination for the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy is required. Must be fully licensed in Alabama within 60 days of hire.
  • System Maintenance Create and maintain medication order strings and order sets. Performs vendor system testing and software upgrades/versions. Provides expertise and management of pharmacy medication use with particular focus on clinical functionality, medication reconciliation, and medication ordering. Implement and maintain decision support tools for medication ordering in pharmacy and the CPOE system. Integrate workflow processes between various technology systems.
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  • Project management skills preferred (ability to lead meetings, prioritize, resolve conflicts, maintain issue lists, manage project plan).
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Experience using word processing and spreadsheet software is required; database applications such as Microsoft Access or SQL desirable.
