Description:

Administers anesthesia and anesthesia related care under the orders of a physician. Monitors and supports vital life functions. Acts as the patient’s advocate while the patient is under anesthesia. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Attends at least 50% staff meeting annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient, neonate through geriatric.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Records all pertinent events taking place during the induction of, maintenance of, and emergence from anesthesia, including the dosage and duration of all anesthetic agents, other drugs, IV fluids, and blood products on the patient receiving anesthesia care.
  • Performs a smooth induction of anesthesia for patients requiring general anesthetic.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patient and family.
  • Collects and interprets patient physiological data by selecting, applying, or inserting noninvasive monitoring modalities.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Demonstrates acknowledgement of customer requests.
  • Demonstrates completion of all assigned job duties in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, standards, and/or protocols.
  • Demonstrates protection of patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated timeframe.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling/assignments, and offers assistance to others when assignments are completed.
  • Complies with call schedule and arrives for emergency cases within the time frame defined by organizational policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates use of appropriate communication at all times in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to compliance with all applicable health care laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Practices standard blood and body fluid precautions and appropriate use of PPE.
  • In collaboration with the anesthesiologist, develops, implements and documents an anesthetic plan of care, prior to providing anesthesia.
  • Recognizes signs of child or elder abuse and reports appropriately to Child/Adult protective services.
  • Disposes of sharps and contaminated articles appropriately.
  • Advises staff responsible for post anesthesia care of specific problems related to patient’s condition.
  • Responds to emergency situations requiring anesthesia services.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of and supports the hospital’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Prevents and manages complications through selecting, obtaining, administering medications, fluids or ventilator support in correct dosages and methods
  • Performs smooth patient emergence and recovery from anesthesia by maintaining homeostasis, providing relief from pain and anesthesia side effects.
  • Demonstrate ability to administer all types of anesthesia, including general, regional, mac and TIVA.• Maintains the patient’s physiologic homeostasis and corrects abnormal responses to the anesthesia and/or surgery, should these occur.
  • Responds per hospital and department policy in emergent situations.
  • Is knowledgeable of all emergency codes and emergency preparedness procedures and understands his/her role in response to each of the emergency codes (Code Blue, Code Pink, Code Green, Code Orange, Code Yellow, Code Gray, Code Silver, Code Violet, etc.).
  • Participates actively and positively affects the outcome of customer service activities.
  • Understands performance improvement concepts and demonstrates understanding by defining performance improvement, and verbalizing at least one major goal of the performance improvement program within the hospital setting; ability to describe a quality improvement problem solving process using the Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) model and how its uses assists in reaching improving patient outcomes and/or organizational quality improvement goals.
  • Demonstrates utilization of resources when unable to complete assignments in accordance to policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to dress code.
  • Demonstrates and understands the EORH Code of Conduct.
  • Check all resuscitative equipment prior to the beginning of the first case of the day. Reports any malfunctioning equipment to the Director of Surgical Services or Biomedical Engineer.
  • Advanced pharmacology knowledge.
  • Demonstrates and maintains a thorough understanding of Federal, State, Local Laws and CMS/JACH Accreditation standards.
  • Complies with all organizational policies and procedures regarding ethical business practices.
  • Provides input for departmental hospital change/improvement.
  • Performs an assessment immediately prior to induction of anesthesia of the patient and documents this in the medical record.
  • Able to verbalize at least one departmental and hospital-wide improvement initiative that has occurred within the last 12 months.
  • Provides safe administration of IV fluids, Blood Products, Medications, Narcotics and documents appropriately.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Stays with patient as long as required by the patient’s condition relative to their anesthesia status and until responsibility for proper patient care has been assumed by other qualified individuals.
  • Disposes of waste appropriately.
  • Performs and documents pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient, including all lab values, studies, consults, and pre-anesthesia clinical history.
  • Documentation meets current standards and practices.
  • Documents all narcotic usage.
  • Displays ability to intubate most patients with ease, manages the patient's airway and pulmonary status through the perioperative process
  • Adheres to policy of clinical alarms being set appropriately for patient.
  • Checks all equipment and agents to be used in the administration of the anesthetic to assure safe working order. Reports all malfunctioning equipment to the Director of Surgical Services or Biomedical Engineer.
  • Demonstrates adherence of patient safety goals in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of anesthesia equipment.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics.
  • Recognizes and reports safety and environmental hazards/violations/follows proper hospital procedure.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Participates in and accurately documents “Time Out” performed.
  • Documents evidence of patient being informed of all risks, potential complications, options and alternatives to anesthesia. In collaboration with the anesthesiologist, obtains informed consent.
Requirements:
  • Must have a current and valid APRN/CRNA license in the state of Ohio.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an acute care hospital.
  • Must have a current and valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the state of Ohio.
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, infections and ionizing radiation
  • Occasional requirement to wear Personal Protection Equipment
  • Frequent sitting, standing and walking
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS upon hire and maintain current.
  • Occasional twisting, reaching, grasping, bending, pulling and pushing
  • Knowledge of theory, techniques and practices of anesthesia management.
