About The State Fair Of Texas


Since its inception in 1886, the State Fair of Texas has celebrated all things Texan by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment. The State Fair of Texas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with proceeds helping to preserve and improve our home, Fair Park; underwrite museums, community initiatives, and scholarship programs to support students throughout the Lone Star State pursuing higher education; and help improve State Fair operations.


Summary


The Creative Arts staff works in 14 different Arts & Crafts Departments across 1100 different categories. Pre-Fair from July until the Fair opens at the end of September, each employee is responsible for numerous categories. Must be able to multi-task as they will be responsible for answering the State Fair of Texas guest questions and assisting with their needs. During the Annual State Fair of Texas, staff may work in the Contest Kitchen conducting Cooking Contests.


Duties And Responsibilities


Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Essential Functions:


  • Breaks down showcases after fair and returns items to contestants.
  • Conduct 5 days of judging by professionals.
  • Decorate showcases with winning entries.
  • Take in entries for various competitions and categories.
  • Operate the information and cookbook booth.
  • During Fair conduct Cooking Contests.


Experience And Training Guidelines


Any combination of experience that would likely provide the required knowledge is qualifying:


Qualifications


  • The ability to think about a task in a new or different way.
  • Must be flexible and capable of multitasking.
  • Excellent Customer Service skills
  • Must be detail-oriented and very organized.


Preferred Education and/or Experience:


  • Previous work experience Arts & Crafts.
  • High School Diploma or higher level of education.
  • Oral and written communication.


License or Certificate:


  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate Texas driver's license.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED and EXERCISED


  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Reports to Creative Arts Director


Physical Conditions:
  • Moving short and long distances to access office supplies, meet guests, perform duties within Fairgrounds, etc.
  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for
  • Occasionally lift objects no more than 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time.
  • Verbally communicate with both internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to climb a ladder when decorating showcases.
