Corrections and Custody Officer 2 – Transport (SI15)
Full Time - Permanent
Salary Range: $4,557 - $6,124 Monthly

The Department of Corrections, Transportation Unit, has a permanent, full time, Corrections and Custody Officer 2 (CO2) position open, available in Kennewick, Washington. This position, position number SI15, is located at the Benton County Jail.

The work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Work hours are determined by unit needs and are at the discretion of the unit supervisor. Duties

As a CO2 for Transport , some of your duties will include:
  • Check road and weather conditions prior to transport and adjust routes and methods for increased safety.
  • Use only state vehicles when transporting supervised/incarcerated individuals.
  • Attend all annual department required In-service training to include Firearms, OC, and Control and Defensive Tactics Training.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Department Transportation Standards policy to properly complete transports.
  • Carry a firearm, Taser, OC, and other related equipment and wear a protective vest while on duty.
  • AppIy appropriate, constructive, and professional authority.
    • Effectively and professionally communicate with supervised/incarcerated individuals, staff, and law enforcement agencies in all types of situations.
    • Use appropriate de-escalation skills during stressful and potentially dangerous situations.
    • Advise supervised/incarcerated individuals concerning rules and regulations and provide clear direction.
    • Work collaboratively with jail and prison staff.
    • Brief appropriate personnel with pertinent information to make aware of current and potential situations that may require action.
    • Follow individual facility rules and directives regarding booking/release processes.
    • Recall detailed observations and write reports regarding occurrences that may require action by supervisor.
    • Write incident reports or disciplinary reports detailing individuals’ behavior and violations or rules and regulations.
    • Maintain daily activity logs.
    • Serve as a positive role model for other Corrections and Custody Officers and assist in providing on-the-job training, as directed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with jail and prison staff.
  • Advise supervised/incarcerated individuals concerning rules and regulations and provide clear direction.
  • Attend all required training and maintain certifications, as required.
    • Attend all annual department required In-service training to include Firearms, OC, and Control and Defensive Tactics Training.
    • Maintain certification for Taser equipment.
    • Maintain a valid Driver's License with no restrictions.
  • Use appropriate level of force, as needed, to maintain public and staff safety and security.
  • Communicate with HQ Nurses Desk regarding any medical/mental health issues that occur or are observed prior to or during transport.
  • Ensure vehicle safety, search and restraint equipment is on hand and operational prior to transport.
  • Monitor individual(s) activities and movements during entire transport.
  • Search transport vehicles for contraband prior to transporting supervised/incarcerated individuals.
  • Report and document problems and failures. Maintain proper use, control, and accountability of keys, tools, and equipment.
  • Recall detailed observations and write reports regarding occurrences that may require action by supervisor.
  • Complete required documentation prior to, during, and after each transport
  • Secure all supervised/incarcerated individuals’ property when applicable.
  • Follow individual facility rules and directives regarding booking/release processes.
  • Maintain a valid Driver's License with no restrictions.
  • Effectively communicate with Federal, State, and Local law enforcement entities in a professional manner that positively represents the Department, Facility, and the Transportation Unit.
  • Brief appropriate personnel with pertinent information to make aware of current and potential situations that may require action.
  • Inspect vehicle and equipment for routine maintenance needs and mechanical defects.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with supervised/incarcerated individuals, staff, and law enforcement agencies in all types of situations.
  • Maintain certification for Taser equipment.
  • Use appropriate de-escalation skills during stressful and potentially dangerous situations.
  • Drive in a safe manner to and from each location obeying all traffic laws.
  • Securely pat search supervised/incarcerated individuals prior to transporting.
  • Write incident reports or disciplinary reports detailing individuals’ behavior and violations or rules and regulations.
  • Utilize electronic communication devices such as radios, cell phones, and body alarms as identified by the supervisor and local practices.
  • Seize dangerous items, evidence, contraband and controlled or unauthorized substances.
  • Serve as a positive role model for other Corrections and Custody Officers and assist in providing on-the-job training, as directed.
  • Arrange and facilitate repairs with vehicle maintenance shops.
  • Transport of male and female individuals, in custody and out of custody, both restrained and unrestrained.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle, equipment, and accessories.
    • Inspect vehicle and equipment for routine maintenance needs and mechanical defects.
    • Arrange and facilitate repairs with vehicle maintenance shops.
    • Use only state vehicles when transporting supervised/incarcerated individuals.
    • Ensure vehicle safety, search and restraint equipment is on hand and operational prior to transport.

  • Follow universal precautions when conducting searches/transports.
  • Verify individuals’ identity and destination prior to beginning of transports or release through the use of Transfer Order(s), Control Card(s), Judgement & Sentence, and Warrant of Commitment.
  • Apply restraints.
  • Operating a state/rental vehicle (must possess a valid, unrestricted license at all times).
  • Conduct safe and secure transports of supervised/incarcerated individuals under DOC supervision to and from county and state confinement facilities, to include prisons, work release, partial confinement, jails, and other secure holding facilities as directed.
    • Transport of male and female individuals, in custody and out of custody, both restrained and unrestrained.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of the Department Transportation Standards policy to properly complete transports.
    • Communicate with HQ Nurses Desk regarding any medical/mental health issues that occur or are observed prior to or during transport.
    • Verify individuals’ identity and destination prior to beginning of transports or release through the use of Transfer Order(s), Control Card(s), Judgement & Sentence, and Warrant of Commitment.

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license This position requires the incumbent to wear a respirator. Incumbent must remain clean-shaven in all areas of the respirator fit and have medical clearance to wear a respirator.
  • Successful completion of Correctional Worker's CORE and all required training
  • At least one (1) year experience as a Corrections & Custody Officer.

Telework Details
The position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington, using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at the time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have an available “drop in” area; however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
