Job Locations: US-MO-Kansas City Your Opportunity:
The Corporate Food Safety Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for auditing current operational procedures and implementing new/revised procedures to ensure each facility remains in regulatory compliance with the USDA’s Code Federal Regulations, Policies, Directives and Facility Notices. They will work to ensure Smithfield Policies, Programs, Customer requirements, and specifications are adhered to. They work very closely with the Operations Divisional Vice Presidents to ensure the facilities are utilizing the most cost effective, scientifically defendable technologies in the production of Smithfield products. They will provide operational training/auditing in their respective areas of expertise. The position will also be responsible for driving continuous improvement and providing leadership to support plant and company objectives.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Research and monitor emerging industry issues by reviewing the internet; published scientific documents and attending workshops. Identify and implement cost effective, scientifically supportable solutions, thus mitigating the negative impact of an emerging industry problem.
  • Ensure facility’s food safety and quality system is scientifically defendable and in full compliance with the USDA Code of Federal Regulations, Policies, Directives and Facility Notices. Audit areas include: 1) Written policies; 2) Enforcement and Implementation of the written policies in the production environment; 3) Accuracy and Thoroughness of Regulatory Reports.
  • Provide functional leadership to support department and plant objectives.
  • Provide training, as needed, to the Food Safety and Quality Assurance staff and Plant employees, thus ensuring the highest standard of practices are met. Provide support, as necessary, for the facilities during customer audits or regulatory assessments. Areas of expertise for training include but are not limited to: Smokehouse Calibration and Operations, Sanitary Equipment Design; microbiological harborage identification; Quality Plan and Product Regulatory Requirements.
  • Using scientific principles, this role analyzes, interprets and evaluates in-process analytical data and author/develop recommended system improvements which are cost effective and scientifically supportable. Data analysis will be performed on a continuous basis to ensure potential trending is identified and to assist Operations in troubleshooting problematic systems or departments etc.
  • Drive continuous improvement methodologies to instill a proactive culture within the different facilities.
  • Author, review and update food safety and quality policies to ensure compliance with USDA and FDA Regulations; Customer Contract Business Requirements; Safe Quality Foods 2000 System Level 3 Code; and Corporate direction.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience using a full range of continuous improvement tools and fundamentals to drive results.
  • Previous multi-site responsibility and perishable experience a plus.
  • Must have the ability to complete required applicable forms in English, which requires the ability to read and write in English.
  • Relevant experience with government regulatory requirements in food processing (USDA, FDA, etc) is required.
  • Minimum of 2+ years’ experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in food manufacturing processes, quality assurance principles, food science and meat processing, SPC and statistics.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with demonstrated multi-tasking and project management skills.
  • At least 4 years in a management capacity within a manufacturing environment under USDA, preferred.
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a regionally accredited four-year college or university and 5+ years’ experience in the food industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to travel up to 70% of the time. Travel will be primarily to our process facilities but will also involve occasional meetings with customers, sales, or professional meetings.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office, Inventory software, Manufacturing software and SAP.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to uphold regulatory, company, and customer standards.
  • Ability to document expertise in design & execution of Quality/technical work.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.
