This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Associate Industrial Hygienist for our Tampa, FL office. In this role you will provide technical support on a variety of industrial hygiene (IH) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) projects.

Provides technical assistance for the collection, identification, and compiling of observational and spatial data concerning a variety of biological, physical, and earth sciences. Provides support to technical staff and project managers for environmental work and permitting projects. Tasks may include assisting with the development of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, air emission, pollution control, cultural impact, and preserving the quality of the environment by identifying, controlling, and preventing disruption to environmental systems and species caused by human activity. Generates accurate and concise documentation assessing project areas, and applying and integrating the science of the interactions between the physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment to solve environmental challenges. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

This position requires periodic travel within the United States and internationally for work at client sites. This individual should expect to spend approximately 80% of their work time at client sites; each individual trip generally lasts 1 to 5 days for this position. This individual should be able to conduct assessments at industrial facilities, including climbing ladders, walking upstairs, and carrying field equipment. This individual will work closely with and support senior IH and EHS practitioners and project managers. Interacting with clients and regulators to meet task and budget requirements is a key to success in this position.

Your Impact

  • Preparing technical reports, including documentation of field investigative procedures, data management and interpretation, and development of graphical and tabular presentation of data.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, laboratory documentation, written procedures, and logbooks.
  • Preparing and submitting periodic regulatory reports.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Perform basic professional environmental science work relating to ecological systems, air, and water resources, verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance on various workplace health and safety issues.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with health and safety risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with low-level threat mitigation activities and remediation projects to minimize impacts to the human health and the environment.
  • Assist with collecting, identifying, and compiling observational, spatial, and environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
  • WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Conducting field assignments, such as performing industrial hygiene monitoring, noise assessments, hazardous materials surveying and abatement monitoring, mold inspections and remediation monitoring, indoor air quality assessments, chemical inventory assessments, ergonomics assessments, job hazard assessments and similar assignments.
  • Assist with maintaining and calibrating equipment and tools, troubleshooting or reporting on malfunctions, and performing inventory control activities.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and statistical analysis of exposure data.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field work permitting.
  • Assisting senior staff in conducting EHS audits and EHS program development.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and web-based applications.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Proficiency with IH sampling techniques and equipment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Ecology, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of experience working as an Industrial Hygienist.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Highly familiar with relevant occupational health and safety laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety Engineering.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
