SoCalGas is seeking a Construction Technician based in the Visalia Area ! This is a DOT position with starting pay at 39.03/hr.
Primary Purpose:
Construction Technicians are instrumental in achieving SoCalGas' mission to build the cleanest, safest, and most innovative energy company in America. In this vital role, Construction Technicians work as part of a highly skilled gas distribution team to ensure the safety and reliability of energy to the communities we proudly serve. Using specialized tools and equipment, Construction Technicians will perform a wide range of skilled, technical, and physical tasks associated with the operation, maintenance, and construction of SoCalGas' distribution system. Construction Technicians work independently and, when necessary, as part of a crew under the direction of higher-skilled personnel. Construction Technicians are included within the Gas Distribution-Construction job progression, providing the direct path for potential advancement to higher-level job opportunities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assembles, alters, rebuilds, tests, and repairs meter set assemblies and restores service to appliances.
  • On some assignments, may drive heavy truck combinations (class A)
  • Effectively completes related paperwork, forms, and documentation.
  • Extracts information from and inputs data into computer systems. Uses computer to update records and order material.
  • On some assignments, reads and collects district pressure charts.
  • On some assignments, operates internally-powered heavy construction equipment (e.g. hydro crane, backhoe, bobcat, etc.)
  • Installs pressure control equipment and operates those that are two inches or smaller.
  • Makes temporary and/or permanent pavement repairs.
  • Connects, operates, and maintains tools.
  • Cuts, threads, and prepares pipe for welding and fusing. Tests completed joints and applies protective coatings.
  • Responsible for the safe operation and driver inspection of Company vehicles.
  • Assists other work groups, as needed.
  • On some assignments, performs plastic joisting.
  • On some assignments performs leak surveys.
  • Performs duties to Company guidelines and established safety procedures.
  • Inspects, identifies, maintains, and operates basic types of mainline pipeline valves.
  • Performs various other equivalent and lower-grade functions that the employee has been trained or for which training will be provided.
  • On some assignments, maintains regulator stations.
  • Performs turn-ons, closes and seasonal lights.
  • Digs and back0fills excavations using manual and/or powered tools and equipment.
Contacts
Frequent contacts include customers, city inspectors, and various Company employees and supervisors involved in maintaining the pipeline system. Must communicate clearly.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a valid California driver license. Must pass a pre-employment drug test if a new hire or moving from a non-safety sensitive job. All incumbents are subject to participation in the company random drug testing program. Must pass pre-qualification examinations. Must pass physical abilities testing. Must have basic computer and communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous training or experience in jobs requiring mechanical, construction, and pressure control skills.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of and ability to perform basic installation, repair, and maintenance of smaller pipeline facilities.
  • Leadership ability and customer contact skills.
Other
  • May be required to work on-call on a rotating basis. May be required to work emergency call-outs adn be able to work occassional extensive hours.
Physical Demands
Very Heavy - Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more with lifting objects in excess of 100 pounds as required.
Environmental Conditions
  • May be required to handle hazardous materials and waste.
  • May be required to work with high pressure gas.
  • Exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, rotating and vibrating equipment, rough terrain, and occasional work on ladders, roofs, attics, or high platforms, as well as confined spaces.
  • Work will require entry to customer premises and will include outdoor activity.
Equipment
  • Assists with the operation of welding equipment, gauges, and hand-held electronic instruments.
  • Operates pipe locator, leak detector, plastic fusion equipment, shovel, heavy construction equipment, (e.g. bobcat, backhoe, hydro crane, etc. ) and other pneumatic, power or hand tools.
  • Operates PC and accesses mainframe programs.
