Job Description
The Communications Specialist is responsible for identifying, proposing, and implementing strategies related to communications, marketing, and promotional activities specific to student belonging and inclusion, whose audiences include students, parents, faculty, staff, community members, and guests, as well as other Division of Student Life units and departments. The communications specialist will also work with the UI Office of Strategic Communication on media relations and the Division of Student Life Strategic Communications Director to implement efforts which cross-promote student support initiatives, programs, and opportunities within the division and the university.
This position will serve as a direct advisor to the executive director of belonging and inclusion and assistant to the vice president for student life and serve as a member of the respective leadership teams, and reports to the director of Student Life Communications.

About The Division Of Student Life
The Division of Student Life is comprised of staff that embrace new ideas and thoughts, works together to keep our students safe, and provides them with life-changing experiences. The Division of Student Life includes 15 departments that span from Recreation Services to the Office of Leadership, Service and Civic Engagement and everything in between. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including an active commitment to excellence through diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Extensive knowledge of marketing channels including public relations, web and social media. Demonstrated experience developing and executing communications plans. Working knowledge of social media analytic tracking. This should include experience writing professionally for a variety of platforms (print, web, social media, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite software programs (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Extensive ability to manage multiple concurrent projects or activities, effectively judging priorities and allocation of time.
  • Previous experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion, higher education, student services, or student organizations and involvement.
  • Experience (typically 1-3 years) in communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • Previous supervisory experience, preferably including supervision of part- or full-time staff.
  • Bachelor's degree in strategic communications, marketing, journalism, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills. This includes the ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Demonstrated experience with e-mail campaign management.
  • Demonstrated vision, initiative, and ability to work as part of a team.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of automated work order systems to manage multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Some experience with special event planning and execution.
  • Preference for experience of 3+ years.
  • Familiarity and experience with working in a college or university setting.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software programs.
