The Job: The Communications Coordinator will create and execute on creative and innovative ideas to increase awareness and interest in the Museum to drive attendance and raise the profile of our science education mission. This person will support and execute the development and implementation of external communications activities across earned media, influencer relations, social media, and related events.


Responsibilities:


  • Respond to media requests, including Museum visits, scheduling interviews, and preparing spokespeople and materials.
  • Coordinate communications timelines with overall editorial calendars throughout MSI.
  • Drive storytelling with new and creative ideas across all communication channels and compose and pitch innovative story angles and other external communications tactics.
  • Compile weekly, monthly, annual and special-topic media performance metrics and reports.
  • In conjunction with the Marketing Team, develop and activate comprehensive marketing communications plan to support institutional DEAI/multicultural initiatives.
  • Assist with planning and execution of Public Relation events, including press conferences, media tours and influencer events.
  • Mine stories across the Museum that help further business objectives and identify opportunities and tactics to proactively pitch stories.
  • Work with in-house and external creative partners (video producers, photographers, graphic designers) and PR agency to create and deliver content.
  • Compose and pitch innovative story angles to drive storytelling across all communication channels.
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with reporters, producers and influencers at broadcast, print, trade, online and social media outlets in collaboration with the Director, Public Relations.
  • Support the social media team with content development and community engagement as needed.
  • Build, edit and update the press pages on MSI’s website.
  • Draft media materials, including but not limited to press releases, media alerts, Q&A’s, fact sheets, key messages and talking points, etc.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.
  • Creative, entrepreneurial and results driven.
  • Strong business, marketing and social media acumen, and an understanding of key metrics relevant to achieving an organization’s strategic plans.
  • Proven ability to collaborate, work in cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects at once in a rapid-paced, constantly changing environment.
  • Proven digital native experience
  • Experience with cultural institutions, sports, entertainment, Consumer Package Goods, or related agency experience a plus.
  • Two (2) – four (4) years’ experience in media relations, promotional communications, marketing, business, or related discipline.
