Specialist Animal Welfare
Job Profile Summary
Summary: The primary responsibility of this position will be to support animal welfare (AW) programs that ensure that Cobb poultry are raised, handled, and transported in a safe, humane, and appropriate manner throughout our supply chain in accordance with company and national standards for animal care and handling. Specifically, this role will include performing animal welfare and handling audits, assisting with the development and management of best practice training programs, the review of AW trends for the assigned production areas, and effective interdepartmental communication. Assist with development and refinement of animal welfare training materials that will be used by Cobb and contractual staff at live animal facilities. Facilitate training at production facilities, when possible, for personnel that have contact with live animals. Assist with training material and deliver training to ensure that staff understand best practices and animal welfare expectations. Verify compliance to ensure training is completed during regular live production visits and verify understanding during communication with staff during audits. Conduct unannounced and planned audits at Cobb production facilities, hatcheries, and farms to verify animal welfare program compliance with company and industry standards. Conduct process audits to verify animal handling procedures and humane transportation of live poultry. Provide constructive feedback and communicate with production managers at company locations during audits. Review and record audits results within company database. Assist with the refinement of current Cobb AW audits based on observations of bird care, bird handling, and transportation at live production facilities to ensure program implementation. Assist with execution of 3rd party welfare audits within assigned production areas as scheduled. Collaborate with business leaders in assigned areas ex: complex managers, hatchery crew farm managers, and communicate directly with production departments after all animal welfare visits audits. Provide technical support and assistance with the Cobb AW program and ensure implementation of corrective actions and audit recommendations. Create and distribute written audit reports after each visit. Analyze trends for animal welfare data for assigned complexes and participate in regular meetings with the Cobb AW Team, and Cobb QA Department. Assist the Cobb AW and QA Teams with internal special projects, research trials, training projects, and evaluation of innovative technology to meet business needs for animal welfare.
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience: College degree or equivalent experience with 2 plus years of progressive experience in field of expertise or advanced degree with limited experience.
Accountability Role: Experienced professional position requiring an understanding of broad concepts related to poultry production and animal welfare. Requires ability to work independently on moderately complex assignments with minimal supervision. Interprets and expands on complete and diverse procedures.
Computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required. Previous experience with development of training programs and training videos a plus. Supervisory: None. This position does not have any direct reports.
Travel: Overnight travel and occasional night work required. Ability to travel 1 to 2 weeks per month to the assigned Cobb complexes within the United States.
Biosecurity: The jobsite is a biosecurity environment which requires showering before entering the facility and could require multiple showers during the workday. Appropriate clothing and footwear is provided by the Company. No jewelry may be worn on the jobsite except for medical ID jewelry. Must be willing to sign an agreement to avoid any avian species (chickens, ducks, birds) . The Company Animal Welfare Policy must be followed at all times.
Physical: Must use safe lifting techniques. While performing the duties of this job the team member is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, talk, and hear. The team member must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Personal Protective Equipment Required: Team Member is expected to follow the required safety procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment.
