Job Description

Vesta is a USA-based climate startup with a mission to help meet the challenge of the climate crisis by removing billions of tons of excess atmospheric carbon dioxide through Coastal Carbon Capture (CCC). CCC is a nature-based negative emission approach that deploys carbon-removing sand made from the natural mineral olivine in coastal areas. This leads to significant CO2 sequestration from the atmosphere and has the potential to be the most cost-effective, scalable method of permanent carbon dioxide removal on earth. Vesta is a fast-growing company consisting of scientists, operators, and engineers conducting laboratory studies and field trials of CCC at domestic and international locations. The goal is to determine if CCC can be a safe, effective, and affordable means of permanently sequestering excess atmospheric CO2 - and if so to scale it up as rapidly as can be done safely.

:

Vesta is seeking a mid- to senior-level Coastal Engineer to play a major role in shaping and driving Vesta’s field research and development program. The objective of this position is threefold: (1) to facilitate the permitting, design and construction of Vesta’s Coastal Carbon Capture field trials, including coordinating with local engineering partners, as well as Vesta's scientific team, to develop site-specific construction designs that optimize for efficient, safe, and economical deployments, (2) to coordinate with Vesta’s science core research, mining and grinding, and hardware and tech teams in developing methods for performing scaled deployments of Coastal Carbon Capture (1MM+ tonnes of olivine sand), and (3) to support Vesta’s business development and deployments pipeline team in their efforts to identify potential sites for field trials and scaled deployments around the world. This is a significant leadership opportunity at a fast-growing climate-tech company with the potential for very large scale carbon dioxide removal.

Vesta’s Coastal Engineer will report to Vesta’s Head of Operations and will drive significant parts of Vesta’s global deployment program. Applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in coastal or civil engineering focused on coastal, ocean, marine, environmental, or related fields may qualify for this position, though Vesta is seeking candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas: numerical modeling, beach nourishment design, marine structure design, coastal processes, resilience, and construction management.

The role will involve the design, development, and management of technical teams executing multiple projects with various collaborators and contractors. This role will also engage with various non-technical stakeholders, including community members, regulatory agencies, governmental officials, and, potentially, the press.

Specific Duties:

  • Contribute to research and funding proposal writing as necessary
  • Participate in Vesta’s research and development programs for designing scaled deployments of Coastal Carbon Capture, including closely coordinating with Vesta’s geomorphology and modeling teams to develop tools and methods for efficiently and effectively capturing carbon dioxide via Coastal Carbon Capture
  • Communicate with staff, clients, contractors, and all government levels of regulatory agencies regarding engineering, permitting, and site development issues
  • Present at conferences and workshops relevant to permitting, designing and constructing Coastal Carbon Capture deployments
  • Manage local coastal engineers or coastal engineering firms to ensure that the technical aspects of Vesta research projects meet quality expectations while complementing design intent
  • Support Vesta’s business development and pipeline team to identify and evaluate potential locations for deployments of Coastal Carbon Capture, including facilitating contracting with Vesta’s legal team
  • Coordinate with Vesta’s finance and project management teams to ensure all engineering activities occur on time and on budget
  • Serve as internal coastal engineer for Vesta’s Coastal Carbon Capture projects
  • Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching
  • Perform site reviews, construction site visits, and coordinate all aspects of permitting, design and construction administration for Vesta

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in coastal processes modeling, coastal resilience/protection projects, stormwater management, coastal structures, or similar field experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent with relevant coursework in numerical modeling, structures, hydraulics, wave mechanics, and coastal processes
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience working as a Civil/Coastal Engineer or in a Civil/Coastal Engineering firm
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to work with clients and colleagues at all levels
  • Field experience leading and/or supporting contract administration associated with the construction of coastal improvements
  • Ability to multitask under rigid deadlines
  • Ability to travel (less than 40% of time) and work remotely
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams in preparing design and engineering documents through all phases of project development, including planning, design, contract documents, and reports
  • Experience modeling or working with models of littoral processes, wave transformation, and harbor hydrodynamics
  • Experience in data analysis and related software (e.g., Excel, Matlab, Python)
  • Experienced in morphodynamic modeling such as Delft3D, preferred

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • A master’s degree preferred in coastal or environmental civil engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or ability to obtain the same within 6 months

Vesta offers a competitive compensation package that includes equity; health, vision and dental benefits; a fully remote role; and unlimited PTO.
