Job Description

The Claims Agent II is responsible for investigating, evaluating and resolving general liability and property claims presented against WSSC Water. The resolution process involves inspecting contents and structural damages, interacting with cleaning companies and inspectors, evaluating the actual cash value of losses, drafting authority memorandum and negotiating settlements.

Essential Functions
  • Secures statements (recorded and written) from claimants, employees, witnesses, etc.

  • Inspects incident scenes to secure photographs and diagrams and assess damage

  • Prepares property damage estimates

  • Pays/monitors payments to contractors and subcontractors

  • Enters contents listings into database

  • Works closely with assigned claimants regarding the disposition of their claims

  • Pursues subjugation interests and salvage disposal

  • Prepares reports regarding negligence, possible defenses, evaluations and settlement recommendations

  • Negotiates settlements with claimants or attorneys

  • Understands and applies Maryland Annotated Code

  • Understands liability issues

  • Solicits information from witnesses, attorneys, medical staff; plumbers, government officials, and contractors

  • Prepares reports for Dispute Resolving Committee and testifies, if needed

  • Writes settlement and denial letters to claimants

  • Interprets homeowners’ policies

  • Explains water/sewer endorsement

  • Understands small dwelling repair estimates

  • Provides reports on claims and expenses

  • Trains Emergency Services/Claims Agents I on claims

  • Responds to emergencies

  • Maintains appropriate records and files

  • Responsible for processing billed work (damage caused by others to WSSC Water lines and structures)

  • Responsible for payment of cleaning and plumbing claims bills

  • Responsible for on-site fire hydrant inspections billing

  • Researches and responds to customer inquiries about billed work and claims

  • Prepares payment requests, pays vendors in MAPS

  • Coordinates with Accounting to ensure accurate billing of damages

  • Interacts with General Counsel’s Office extensively regarding uncollected billing of damages

Work Environment And Physical Demands
Worked is performed in business casual office environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledgeable regarding investigative techniques, negligence and contract law, construction costs/methods

  • Familiarity with negotiating techniques, WSSC Water Code

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Familiarity with PC operations

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills required

  • Ability to build rapport with a diverse public

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 4 years’ experience adjusting property damage or bodily injury claims
