The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of UW-Madison in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. We are responsible for everything from the building projects that change the face of campus to the flowers that beautify the grounds.
More about the Physical Plant Department and the Heating & Cooling Plant:
Physical Plant is the largest FP&M organizational unit and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus buildings, grounds, and utilities. Design resources, construction by the trades, and specialized facilities services are available for departmental requests and remodeling projects on a fee-for-service basis.
The Charter Street Heating & Cooling Plant and the Walnut Street Heating & Cooling Plant supply steam, chilled water, compressed air, electricity, and soft domestic water to the UW campus, as well as to UW Hospital & Clinics, the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratories, and the Division of Veterans Affairs VA Hospital, and some other non-campus customers.
Our plant operators also coordinate with the West Campus Cogeneration facility (which produces electricity for Madison Gas and Electric customers) on steam and chilled water needs for heating and air-conditioning on campus.
More about the Chiller Technician position:
The Chiller Technician will troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, tune, and perform preventive maintenance to the chillers on site as well as the chillers that the UW owns at the West Campus Cogeneration facility. The Chiller Technician will play a key role in maintaining critical chilled water to UW-Madison in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner.
Responsibilities:
- 25% Receives, prioritizes, and responds to service requests according to established timelines and policies
- 5% Inventories, orders, and performs safe handling of various types of refrigerants
- 25% Identifies, prioritizes, troubleshoots, and escalates system problems, equipment malfunctions, and repair needs
- 5% Develops and schedules operational work plans for staff occasionally
- 25% Performs scheduled preventative and routine maintenance and documents activity on equipment and systems to ensure optimal and safe operation
- 15% Monitors, tests, maintains, and repairs Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, related equipment, and controls according to established policies and procedures

Qualifications:
- Universal refrigerant certification
Preferred:
- Knowledge/Experience in repairing and rebuilding automatic instruments
- Knowledge and experience maintaining and repairing cooling towers
- Knowledge of the freon (refrigeration) cycle
- Minimum 3 years diagnosing, repairing and tuning large >1,000 ton centrifugal Chillers
