Job Description
Overview:
The Chief Operating Officer will partner with other executives to achieve excellence in operational performance and the fulfillment of NAH strategy objectives. The COO is responsible for supporting the achievement of Northern Arizona Healthcare's strategic goals by overseeing the operations of NAH hospital systems which includes directing and coordinating all aspects of NAH'S two hospitals and related operational entities. In addition, it is expected this individual will be a vital member of the organization's administrative team and will interface with the medical staff regarding hospital and regional operational issues.The COO will also be responsible for overseeing nursing across the system, as the system Chief Nursing Officer will report to the COO. Other system-wide responsibility will include the development and performance of the NAH Trauma, Orthopedics, and Cardiology service lines.
Responsibilities:
Workforce Development/People Management
  • In conjunction with the Executive Team and other operational leaders, identifies human capital requirements consistent with the organization's vision, strategy, and operational needs, develops appropriate recruitment and retention strategies; and implements operational plans to ensure the organization's continual human capital needs are met.
  • Evaluates the performance of direct reports in accordance with established performance standards, goals, job responsibilities and assigned functions; provides ongoing performance feedback and annual written performance evaluations; and identifies and nurtures those capable of performing at higher levels.
  • Works collaboratively with the senior leadership team to create a learning and service oriented culture at NAH; assess strengths and opportunities of existing leadership team; mentor and coach those that need further development; recruit and make changes as necessary.
  • Ensures consistent and effective leadership across all areas of responsibility.
  • Leads a culture of excellence which achieves employee and physician engagement scores in the top 20th percentile.

Provider and Employee Engagement and Integration

  • Develops a culture that enhances engagement which aligns with NAH system goals and objectives; continuously improve physician/employee satisfaction and engagement.
  • Maintains a highly visible presence in the system, available to actively problem solve and collaboratively discuss challenges and opportunities.
  • Leads a culture of excellence which achieves employee and physician engagement scores in the top 20th percentile.
  • Develops and maintain a positive rapport with providers and employees by being responsive to their concerns, and communicates promptly and effectively.
  • Provides the leadership in monitoring results and establishing action plans in response to employee/provider engagement feedback results.

Strategy Development and Operational Execution

  • Develops a culture of excellence and accountability and implement best practices across the organization, ensuring the highest clinical performance, patient access, customer service/satisfaction, productivity, physician/employee satisfaction, and financial performance .
  • Utilizes evidence-based performance improvement methods to revamp processes with the goal of systematically removing waste from the organization. Meet cost reduction targets annually.
  • Develops a Master Facility Plan.
  • Communicates a clear vision of the NAH Mission, Vision, and Values and establishes metrics and goals to support organizational objectives.
  • Works closely with stakeholders to ensure understanding and ownership of all initiatives and facilitates goal achievement and objectives.
  • Develops and implements Master Resource Plan as applicable and collaborated.
  • Contributes to the creation and shaping of the organization's vision, the development and implementation of the strategic plan, and the achievement of the annual operating plan consistent with Mission and Core Values of Northern Arizona Healthcare.
  • Oversees Transformation of Care at NAH, in collaboration with other executives.
  • Enhances data collection for analysis and reporting and ensure healthcare industry benchmarks are met.
  • Develops and implements strategic plan for cardiovascular, orthopedics and trauma service lines.

Quality Oversight

  • Identifies gaps in care and variation in processes that require the engagement of operational leaders in a partnership model that is matrixed across NAH.
  • Prioritizes projects, designs and develops integrated programs and systems that align operational processes with organizational strategies resulting in achievement of improved quality, safety, and value.
  • Monitors key safety metrics and indicators and provides direction and feedback to staff regarding plans to address opportunities for improvement.

Financial Stewardship

  • Ensures goals of the system are being met through the achievement of long-term financial sustainability and operational stability.
  • Monitors monthly financials and productivity reports and make necessary adjustments to ensure achievement of organizational performance and budget goals.

Compliance/Safety

  • Accountability for response rates to the safety culture survey.
  • Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
  • Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
  • If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
  • Continually remains knowledgeable of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations; regulatory standards; the organization’s policies and procedures; and the Code of Conduct to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  • Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
  • Accountability for the use of the safety culture survey results in the improvement efforts.
Qualifications:
Education
Masters degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health Administration or similar field- Required

Certification & Licensures

LEAN, PDSA, Six Sigma, etc.- Required

Experience

A minimum of 15 years healthcare administration experience of which at least five years are as a senior leader, ideally as a hospital chief operating officer, vice president of operations or CNO in a complex healthcare system.- Required

Experience working with system leadership to develop and work toward system-wide goals and objectives. Comfortable operating in a matrix management structure.- Required

Prior experience managing multiple service lines and programs.- Required

Demonstrated ability to analyze data and to implement appropriate action plans/reports.- Required

Significant operating success in a healthcare leadership role required, with experience identifying areas that need improvement in patient throughput, productivity and developing improved systems of care in those areas.- Required

Experience with proven positive outcomes regarding financial sustainability initiatives, quality, safety outcomes and engagement- Required

Experience working in a large, complex tertiary environment - Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
