Job Description

Chevron is accepting online applications for the position Chemistthrough 08/21/2023 at 11:59 p.m. (PST).

The Laboratory Chemist is responsible for providing technical support to both the laboratory and refinery. Within the laboratory they ensure all testing complies with method and regulatory requirements, which includes method development, QA/QC oversight, and instrument troubleshooting. They will also work with engineering and operations to troubleshoot refinery issues by determining appropriate laboratory testing and/or perform specialized testing that is not part of the routine testing provided by the lab. Other expectations of the chemist will include working on special projects, which include, but are not limited to, opex reduction, laboratory optimization, and lab consultation for engineering projects.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Perform specialized testing for process stream monitoring and optimization, environmental compliance, and special projects
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, including opex reduction, laboratory optimization, and engineering projects
  • Instrument maintenance including calibrations, troubleshooting, and routine preventative maintenance
  • Ensure compliance to method and regulatory requirements, including training, QA/QC oversight, and maintenance/calibration documentation
  • Consults with Technical, Operations, Maintenance, and Chevron research divisions to select/design appropriate testing for plant optimization and troubleshooting
  • Interpreting/monitoring analytical data and quality control charts
  • Selection, purchase, and implementation of new equipment/instrumentation

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other science related field
  • Ability to communicate chemistry/technical information to audiences of varying technical background
  • Demonstrated teamwork, communication, planning/organizing, leadership skills
  • Strong mechanical skills and ability to use tools to maintain instrumentation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of refinery processes.
  • Knowledge of refinery test methods (e.g. ASTM methods for: GC, AA, IC, XRF, elemental analysis, and wet chemistry)
  • Experience with chemometric modeling and analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to consult on analytical instrumentation and test methods, including method development and equipment/instrumentation purchase and repair.
  • Demonstrated laboratory work experience
  • Understands Statistical Process Control (SPC)
