The Charge Nurse appointed by the Director of Nursing (DON) and/or Administrator to work in conjunction with the DON to help manage the day-to-day activities of the surgery center; coordinates and directs patient care and other related activities according to facility policies and procedures. Assists in planning, developing, organizing, and implementing operational programs, functions in a leadership role and promotes cooperative staff efforts. In addition to the Staff RN Performance Standards, the following standards define the level of practice required of the Charge Nurse. Reports to Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.

• Assists with collection of data of CQI studies and reports as directed by the DON or Administrator.
• Demonstrates ability to apply the Nursing Process to all patients.
• Demonstrates adherence to all Policies and Procedures of the facility.
• Ensures appropriate breaks and lunches for the staff according to the Dept. of Labor policies.
• Facilitates the smooth flow of patients when in charge.
• Delegates responsibilities to professional, technical, and ancillary personnel in the OR and PACU as appropriate, and participates in performance evaluations of same as directed by the Director of Nursing or Administrator.
• Works with the DON in relation to staffing of personnel to cover the needs of the facility during their scheduled Charge Nurse activities.
• Have completed a Registered Nursing Program recognized in the State of California and hold licensure with the Nursing Board.
• Assists with planning and implementing in-service education based on needs of staff as discussed with the Nurse Manager of Compliance.
• Provides direct patient care as needed.
• Five years nursing experience in the day-to-day operations of ambulatory surgical facilities.
• Functions within the limits of the State Nurse Practice Acts.
• Current BCLS and ACLS certification.
• Assures closure of the facility and adequate staffing at the end of the day with 2 ACLS providers in the facility when patients are in the facility.
• Assists in risk management and infection control activities and the dissemination of information to all personnel.
