Brief Description

Job Objective:

Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor, the Certified Phlebotomist III performs various duties associated with specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing. Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, answering questions related to specimens and testing, and assisting with the training of new phlebotomists. In addition, the Certified Phlebotomist III is assigned to patients that need to be re-drawn and assists with competency evaluations as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operates the LIS and HIS as required for the position
• Cleans laboratory equipment, work surfaces and glassware
• Collects laboratory specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary sticks on patients
• Demonstrates proper use of scripting techniques
• Certified Phlebotomist III
• Receives and stocks supplies
• Answers questions regarding test orders, specimen requirements and specimen availability
• Assigned to patients that need to be re-drawn
• Assures completion of all yearly competency testing
• Organizes laboratory orders by priority and specimen type for proper collection and handling of specimens
• Ability to perform at least 12 draws per hour of average complexity
• Demonstrates competence with computer downtime procedures
• Participates in Continuing Education for personal growth and maintenance of certificates and licenses
• Safely and effectively uses all necessary equipment
• Assists with the processing of laboratory specimens
• Records temperatures and notifies appropriate Clinical Laboratory Scientist of out-of-range values
• Assists in training new phlebotomists
• Follows proper isolation techniques
• Assists with competency evaluations if needed

Non-Essential Duties:

• Helps distribute supplies to other departments as needed
• Adds support to other laboratory staff as necessary
• Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations

Education and Experience: Education

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required

Experience

• Minimum of one year experience at an acute care hospital is desirable
• Certified Phlebotomist Ill — Two years of related phlebotomy experience with a minimum of six months at AVH is required
• Experience with infants and pediatrics is required

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

• Possession of a current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health

Physical Requirements:
