Elementary Science Educator - Part Time

This position is part time, 20 hours/week.

We envision a world where everyone is empowered to better the world through science and scientific thinking.

Position Summary

Science is Elementary (SiE) is seeking energetic, engaging science educators to inspire students in underserved elementary schools. Our ideal staff member has an undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field with experience and training in elementary pedagogy, and is passionate about science education.

Our curriculum teaches scientific thinking through hands-on experiments and engineering challenges, with a focus on the physical sciences. It promotes deep understanding of basic science concepts and encourages creativity and teamwork in open ended problem solving. Students show gains of 55%-80% in conceptual learning and increased positive attitudes to science.

We work with several hundred students every month (Transitional Kindergarten through 3rd grade) in school districts across the Bay Area. To learn more about our program, visit www.scienceiselementary.org.

Responsibilities

• Must be punctual, arriving at least 30 minutes prior to the start of each session.
• Transport lesson materials to and from the school sites.
• Prepare materials for lessons.
• Attend monthly staff meetings.
• Learn and deliver a variety of lesson plans for two grade levels in classroom settings.
• Be flexible and friendly with classroom teachers, students, volunteers and staff members.
• Train and supervise volunteers working in classrooms.
• Create a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment for learning in the classroom.

Qualifications

• College degree (STEM major preferred).
• Possess positive classroom management skills.
• Be willing to work varied hours, at multiple school sites, based on program schedule.
• Be able to lift 20 lb.
• Be patient and flexible.
• Classroom experience at the elementary level.
• Strong oral communication skills.

Successful applicant will need to pass a background check and TB test.

0.5 FTE $40,000/year
