The Certified Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy and has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of an Certified Dosimetrist at Hackensack Meridian includes:
  • Dosimetrist can complete Post Seed Implant Plans.
  • Responsible for assisting the physicist with conducting in-service education throughout the hospital in regard to radiation safety. In-service nursing staff, housekeeping personnel, and Radiation Therapy staff on an annual basis. All newly hired staff will be in service prior to initiating floor duty.
  • Dosimetrist can simulate patients in the CT Sim. Dosimetrist does monthly QA in the CT Sim.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Responsible for assisting the physicist in maintaining and inventorying all radiation safety documents, records and equipment for Radiation Oncology required by the various regulatory agencies. Perform sealed-radioactive-source inventory and ambient survey on quarterly basis. All reports are ready for review within this time frame.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Performs and checks various manual dosimetric calculations for the patients with interruptions in radiation therapy. Completes the tasks within 2 days of the placement of the patients' chart on the physicist's desk or in the "Dosimetry Check" file folder in the treatment area.
  • Assists physicists with performance of weekly light field congruence check for linear accelerator and simulator. Check is done on a weekly basis. Any discrepancies are reported and the proper repair service is called to correct discrepancy immediately. The dosimetrist will check light field congruence with the repairman before signing off.
  • Responsible for generating 3D Treatment plans. Plans are complete before set up is done on the machine.
  • Assists physicists with performance of monthly spot checks, quality control and annual calibrations of linear accelerators including both electrons and photons. Checks are done on a monthly basis. Annual calibration is done within 12 months of previous annual calibration. Calibration is done accurately and is compliant with regulatory agencies.
  • Available for guidance in the event of a radiation disaster or emergency. Dosimetrist demonstrates knowledge of hospital disaster plans and aids and abets in carrying out orders of the RSO and physicists.
  • Responsible for generating Intensity Modulated Treatment Plans (IMRT). Plans are to be completed at least 24 hours prior to the patient starting treatment.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in physical or biological sciences with on-the-job training in dosimetry for 1 year.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • 3 years of practical, supervised experience in radiation dosimetry.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Certified Medical Dosimetrist
