Job Description


Do you have a passion for helping others? At Child Support, we help the families of Iowa successfully navigate and understand the importance of providing both financial and emotional support for their children. This includes establishing and maintaining child and medical support orders, as well as processing support payments. We also offer programs to increase and enhance the involvement of parents with their children. We assist with resources for employment to help payors find work and partner with several entities to facilitate parenting programs.


Child Support Case Managers perform complex case management for parents in need of paternity, medical and support establishment, modification of an existing order, and maintenance of support orders. Duties include communicating with a variety of community partners including human service agencies, attorneys, clerks of court, county sheriffs, employers, corrections, and other entities to achieve the goals of the Child Support Program.

Child Support case management requires someone who can independently analyze a variety of complex case situations and legal scenarios to determine the appropriate action needed to establish, maintain, or modify support for families both in and out of the state of Iowa.


A large part of child support work requires communicating with customers via telephone, email, and written correspondence. Some customers may be reluctant to cooperate with Child Support services and programs. We are looking for a case manager who can build relationships with parents and work with them to ensure they are successful.


The selected applicant will be a highly motivated, organized individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and significant proficiency in Microsoft office programs (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook), Adobe, and a wide array of computerized child support functions. Experience/aptitude for learning and using multiple electronic systems is critically important for success in this position.


In Addition, Candidates Must Have The Ability To


  • Accurately retrieve, upload and index mail from an electronic mail system.
  • Manage assigned caseload and demonstrate critical thinking skills required to complete complex tasks independently.
  • Interact with employees and customers in a manner consistent with quality customer service delivery.
  • Adjust and adapt to work pressures, change or difficult situations impacting people or groups without unusual stress reactions.
  • Read and comprehend complex instructions--including federal, state, and local laws, policy and procedures applicable to the Child Support Program--and apply them to child support casework.
  • Produce work that requires extreme accuracy.
  • Resolve problems/issues by using good listening and positive conflict resolution skills.
  • Accurately enter, retrieve, file, generate and correct case folders and/or information from ICAR and various database systems.
  • Perform mathematical calculations needed to accurately reflect support obligations.
  • Comprehend and adhere to the confidentiality provisions stated in the Code of Iowa.
  • Work productively in a team environment.
  • Write clear, concise, and accurate letters that are grammatically correct.
  • Travel occasionally when work is required outside of the office.
  • Prioritize complex tasks and time to meet established performance goals and critical deadlines.
  • Maintain high attendance, as excessive absenteeism negatively impacts the Child Support Program.

Minimum Qualification Requirements


Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:


  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work with Child Support Services.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time public contact work.
  • A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field, and experience equal to one year of full-time public contact work.
