Job Description

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Use advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out more complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles
  • Knowledge of the full range of locking devices and their component parts to include internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide variety of locking systems from various manufacturers
  • Knowledge of construction and repair techniques; the type, grade, and working characteristics of wood and wood substitute materials such as strengths and applications, and skill and accuracy in the operation of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions
  • Skilled in setting up and operating the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses
  • Evaluates problems and determines how or what repairs to make and the type of material and tools to use
  • Skilled in the operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment and are able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance
  • Skilled in performing routine maintenance on equipment by lubricating machines, changing and sharpening saw blades, and by adjusting drive belt tensions
  • Knowledge of panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Carpenter is required to do considerable standing, stooping and bending. Job requires working on ladders and scaffolds which requires working overhead or in a stretched, cramped or awkward position. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such hand tools as handsaws and planers. The incumbent will occasionally lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. They may also be called upon to work extended periods of time to support emergency situations and power outages.
Working Conditions: Some work is done inside a shop area where carpenter is subject to cuts or danger from flying splinters and chips. On some occasions there will be sawdust in the air which can be unpleasant. Carpenter works outside in all kinds of weather and sometimes is exposed to rain or very coldweather. Also works on scaffolding, high ladders or rooftops where there is danger of falling.
