Summary

Information and Technology Services (ITS) has an immediate opening for a Campus Network Support Senior to support the University's campus building networks. The individual will be part of a cohesive team that administers over 10,000+ routers, switches and wireless access points. The main focus for this position will be production support, problem investigation and restoration of service of the campus building networks and working with various technologies support teams within ITS and campus buildings. The team is always looking for ways to be ready for the challenges of tomorrow in supporting the campus enterprise networks. You will report to the Network and Security Operations Manager.

Note: Must be available to work overtime or flex time on short notice for upgrades & other maintenance issues. Need to meet the requirements of driving a U-M vehicle and have a valid driver license with less than 7 points. After hire must have a personal communication device and a home internet connection. Must participate in an on-call rotation.

Responsibilities*

Provide technical support and service restoration on campus enterprise networks. Assist in analyzing, developing maintenance, including backup and recovery strategies, software patches and upgrades. Support and collaborate with team members and other technical staff. Using established procedures, monitors systems for availability, error conditions, space allocation, backup integrity, and performance. Assists with multiple projects including installations, upgrades, moves, adds and changes. Provide input toward the strategic direction for network technologies. Collaborate with team members to provide consultation to other technical teams to develop and implement network systems. Assist in the configuration and administration on the campus enterprise network including: investigation; analysis; monitoring; and, troubleshooting of problems, performance, or error conditions; implementations; creation and maintenance of the campus enterprise network; problem resolution; and, installation and upgrades of products and systems, ensuring integrity, recoverability, security and appropriate use of technologies.

SENIOR LEVEL
Lead projects and delegates tasks according to staff experience and skill levels. Perform limited project management, including resource and time estimates. Participate in strategic planning and setting of technical direction for the department. Make independent decisions that impact operations. Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks and roles. Assignments require originality, assessment of unusual circumstances, and variation in approaches used; use of different and unrelated processes and methods. Work on more than one task at a time and manage work by prioritizing own assignments, schedules, and meetings resulting in completion of work. Proactively anticipate and resolve problems, and creates conditions and processes to support change. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of principles, standards, technologies, and procedures. Comprehend and distill issues, identify problem factors, determine appropriate information, check assumptions against facts, and generates solutions. Promote cooperation and manage relationships. Resolve problems and seek assistance only after own attempts have failed.(without success) Generally works independently, requiring limited direction from more senior staff or management.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science and/or equivalent combination of education, certification and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with current computer technology and applications (e.g. Word, spreadsheet, and collaboration applications).
  • Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of layer 2 IP networks
  • Ability to meet the requirements of driving a U-M vehicle and have a valid driver's license with less than 7 points
  • Ability to leverage appropriate technical tools to perform day-to-day administration tasks, root-cause analysis and service restoration (such as backup, restore, failover, log interpretation, and performance monitoring) for network systems.
  • 4 years of experience configuring and troubleshooting networking equipment in a multi-vendor IP environment .
  • Ability to move and transport and maneuver telecommunication equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 lbs from trucks/loading docks to campus locations for installation or testing
  • 4 years of experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, customer service, organization, prioritization, and troubleshooting to successfully monitor, perform network configuration changes, required documentation and testing/analysis of network equipment/software
  • Experience with some or all of the following technologies: Cisco IOS, Juniper OS, network monitoring tools, desktop OS (Windows, Mac), and copper/fiber infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience with Spanning Tree, Link Aggregation and Router Redundancy Protocols.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Juniper JNCIA/JNCIS-ENT certification and/or Cisco CCNA/CCNP certification
  • Experience with UNIX/LINUX OS file editing and scripting
  • Experience with network automation technologies and Python programming language
  • Experience with Aruba controller based Wi-Fi, 802.1X Authentication and Wireless Accounting
  • Experience troubleshooting fiber and copper network infrastructure
  • Experience with a programming language such as Perl or PHP
  • Demonstrated knowledge of layer 3 IP routing protocols including OSPF, ISIS, MPLS, BGP, VXLAN and EVPN
  • Experience with Juniper OS and Cisco IOS network capture procedures and network analysis tools
  • Experience with desktop and/or network firewalls, VPN
