This is skilled carpentry work on a journeyman level in the construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of campus structure and equipment. All work is subject to spot checking and inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade. Functional contacts include co-workers, other service department employees and other university staff and students.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • May install floor coverings, roofing, tar, screens, cabinets, window glass, partitions, locks and other miscellaneous materials and fixtures. Assist in maintaining shop area; sweep and clean shop or site area as necessary.
  • Perform construction, maintenance, repair, alteration of campus structures, equipment, and other building components and accessories. Determine building materials needed, assemble materials and tools; clean, sharpen and adjust tools as required.
  • May perform or assist in performance of any of the following: preparation of cost estimates, preparation of material orders, maintenance of records and preparation of reports.
  • Because of necessary fluctuations of workloads in the skill area an incumbent in this class may be required, on an occasional basis and according to need, to perform duties outside of his/her trade at a level of skill the same as or lower than required by his/her ordinary assignment. Normal safety requirements, scheduling and the most efficient use of manpower and equipment are taken into consideration in such assignments.
Supervision Received:
Under direct supervision, receive verbal and written instructions, occasionally supplemented by plans, drawings or blueprints, daily on work to be performed. May instruct and/or guide personnel assisting in work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four years of actual work experience and training including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training in the trade.
  • Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.
  • A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs.
  • Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trades tools and equipment.
  • Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.
  • Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy (50-80 lbs.) objects on a daily basis.
  • A valid driver’s license may be required.
  • Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, left, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.
  • Ability on a daily basis to:
    • Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trades tools and equipment.
    • Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy (50-80 lbs.) objects on a daily basis.
    • Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, left, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.
    • Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs.
    • Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.
  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, and drawings.

Depending on the nature of work performed, the incumbent may be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the “Industrial Standard for Respirator Use”.
