Job Description

Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail oriented Biologist to join our vibrant team at Bethesda, MD.


Responsibilities


  • Perform investigations and documentation of cell line growth, optimization of cell culture/fermentation conditions, cell culture technology development, improvement of cell culture platforms, modeling of cell culture behavior, troubleshooting of cell culture/fermentation processes, and tech transfer of defined cell culture/fermentation processes to the clinical production facility.
  • Set-up and operate bioreactors and other cell culture equipment required for development studies and reagent materials production.
  • Capture process descriptions and results in lab notebooks, tech transfer documents, and technical reports.
  • Develop viral vaccines, recombinant proteins and/or virus-like particles or monoclonal antibodies by drawing on experience with asceptic techniques with mammalian cell cultures; immunofluorescent assays; ELISA assays on instruments such as LUMINEX; culturing of cells in suspension; and use of equipment’s such pH, pumps, LUMINEX, kSep, and micro carrierand cell counting instruments.
  • Perform most cell culture experimental studies with minimal oversight.
  • Serve as the upstream SME and technical liaison with the VPPL Data Sciences and Automation group to develop the CCD module within the VPPL’s data integration platform; provide CCD design specification and participate in beta-testing to troubleshoot new application testing such as bug fixes and end-user evaluation; develop versatile automated report templates; train group members on CCD-related data science platform tools/modules; responsible for maintenance, reagent supply, running support, and training of VPPL personnel for the NOVA Biomedical Flex2 system; present experimental findings and status updates in VPP-wide forums; author and review department standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for lab equipment and cell line processes such as vial thaw and transfection protocols.
  • Train junior team members and serve as SME on transient transfection technologies such as Expi and PEI systems, and electroporation (MaxCyte).
  • Contribute results and studies for publication in peer reviewed journals.
  • May telecommute from any US location.
  • Develop upstream manufacturing processes for viral vaccines, recombinant proteins and/or virus-like particles and/or monoclonal antibodies in the Cell Culture Development (CCD) at the Vaccine Production Program Laboratory (VPPL).
  • Participate in project and laboratory meetings, keep current with compliance obligations, and responsible for maintenance of the laboratory and equipment.


Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or a related field
  • 1 year of experience reflecting demonstrable ability in the skill set described above.

Salary $70,000-$81,000
