Job Description
Company Description: NAMI San Diego/Imperial Counties (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a nonprofit organization that provides free education, support services, and advocacy to improve the quality of life of everyone affected by mental illnesses. Primary Responsibilities/Function: The Bilingual Youth and TAY Peer Associate Trainer is responsible for providing training to Middle/High school as well as transitional age youth who have been marginalized due to homelessness, substance misuse, mental illness, racial heritage, and/or sexual orientation. This position works as community educator, motivational trainer and empowerment coach. Works in concert with other trainers, director and program manager and potentially other service providers. Plans and presents age- appropriate group workshops, trainings, focus groups and coaching both in person and on-line using prescribed program materials. Must have excellent youth positive presentation skills, experience with community outreach, public speaking, group management, mentoring. This position may also have occasional communication and relationship building with San Diego County and Imperial County Behavioral Health communities and the Elevate Youth California funders as needed. Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct trainings, presentations, workshops, and focus groups with youth. Above referenced interactions may be virtual and COVID compliant with return to in person activities when deemed safe by local health authorities. Maintain necessary documentations, i.e., surveys, sign-ins, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports, mileage-when applicable, etc. Evaluate and document updates to the program. Participate in community relations efforts, including but not limited to supporting and assisting the development community relationships and support of major NAMI San Diego events in order to meet community awareness goals. Communicate effectively with community leaders to grow and support programs. Participate in regular supervision, mentoring, team building, support, and reviews. Contribute to creating a stigma-free, recovery positive, person-centered, trauma-informed and culturally competent professional presence in the San Diego community at large. Increase job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, as required. Other duties as assigned by Program Manager. Accountability: Reports to NAMI San Diego Elevate Youth California Program Manager. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with qualified disabilities to perform the essential functions. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Prolonged periods of standing and walking. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Minimum Requirements, including linguistic and cultural skills, education, experiences, licenses and certifications: Lived experience with mental illness/co-occurring conditions for self or as a family member strongly preferred with personal wellness plan to maintain recovery essential. A strong positive viewpoint towards mental health, substance misuse, and co-occurring conditions is essential. Familiarity with and use of recovery language is essential. Bachelor's Degree (or working toward Bachelor's Degree) in relevant field preferred (Social Work, Psychology, Community Outreach, Education, Advocacy / Activism) or clearly demonstrated equivalent work experience in the field with experience and education in behavioral health, mental health and wellness. Must have experience working with youth (preferably underserved youth). Ability and willingness to mentor and motivate youth. Excellent communication skills (verbal, non-verbal & written), planning, analyzing, problem solving, time management and coordinating skills. Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills. Advanced knowledge and skills in the use of computer software (Microsoft Office- PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Publisher), email and web navigation. Advanced knowledge and skills in use of video conferencing platforms - Zoom, Go-to-Training, WebEx etc. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations plus the ability and desire to work as part of a team. Confidentiality and discretion are a must. Willingness to support NAMI San Diego's Mission and Values. Ability to drive with valid driver's license, auto insurance, and access to use of an automobile preferable. Ability to present information to public groups; confident public speaking skills. Bi-lingual in Somali or one of threshold languages is necessary for this position. Ability to work from home during public health "stay at home" orders with adequate internet speed and connectivity and phone access. Environment with diverse populations routinely coming in for workshops or training. Ability to work in a variety of settings - from public to private; virtual and in person Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. Community and office setting. Regional travel as needed required.
