The University of Miami/UHealth has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Vice President (AVP), Communications (External Relations). The AVP, develops, implements, and oversees a comprehensive and strategic communications plan for key clinical operations of the health system, which disseminates core messaging for UHealth, leveraging media and community relations. The scope of this role includes major ambulatory and inpatient projects, patient-facing services and other business plans as needed. This role will incorporate media relations plans that target key local and regional broadcast, print and digital outlets, coordination and management of community relations outreach and oversight of sponsorship presence in select venues. This role will work collaboratively and in support of Marketing, Physician Relations, Patient Experience, Development, Strategic Operations, and key leadership to reach a variety of audiences and key constituents, including patients, prospective patients, community leaders, faculty physicians, referring physicians, staff, and researchers. Devise, implement and oversee a strategic communications and media relations plan for the growing clinical operations of the health system, managing multiple projects at once and ensuring that deadlines are met. Build relationships with key media outlets in the region, working proactively to secure earned media, paying special attention to Spanish-language media and business outlets. Develops measurable communications plans to create brand awareness and drive volume growth. Utilizes data (market research, competitive intelligence, ROI, etc.) to drive decision-making related to communication plans. Document performance goals and monitor success. Works collaboratively with clinical, research and academic units to showcase departments, programs, and initiatives. Develop and oversee UHealth’s presence in community relations activities, leveraging the health system’s leadership and experts at various public events. Develops an annual community engagement plan, working collaboratively with other groups. Implement, manage, and direct partnerships with external companies contracted to propel the work of the health system and medical school. Continuously improve and expand methods of reaching key audiences, looking for new platforms as they evolve. Work to ensure that UHealth’s core messaging and mission as an academic medical center is promoted through all communications efforts, creating a steady drumbeat within the South Florida community. Organize talking points and media training for key spokespeople as needed. Collaborating with Marketing, manage key assets and UHealth presence related to high-profile sponsorships, looking for ways to maximize the health system’s presence within the community. Integrate social media and other digital platforms to further promote UHealth clinical care in the region. Collaborates with Health System marketing and communications team to ensure marketing and communications strategy and tactics are aligned and integrated. Partners with health system colleagues including Development, University Communications, etc.

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in communications, with a track record of ever-increasing responsibilities, management capacities and results-achieving initiatives.
  • Healthcare communications experience a must.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Adept in the digital environment, including but not limited to social media, Internet, video, and interactive media.
  • Independent facilitator with proven organizational ability and skill for handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated expertise in media relations and communications with the multi-media channels of South Florida, journalists, and other prominent news outlets.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Proven leadership and team-building abilities to identify, evaluate, recruit, and retain communications talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other departments toward achieving system-wide goals.
