Job Description

The Oral Surgery Assistant (OSA) assigned to the Oral Surgery Clinic provides support to the clinic staff. The OSA collaborates with the clinic registered nurse, oral surgery residents and attendings to provide multi-disciplinary patient care.
Responsibilities
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY) 5% Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect. � Adheres to standard hospital procedures under the direction of the Perioperative Clinical Manager and performs in a manner conducive to personnel and patient safety. - 10% � Ensures the operatory is stocked and cleaned before and in between procedures. Prepares mayo tray/supplies in operatory. Utilizes clean technique and universal precautions during set-up and patient care. Performs a pre-procedural check on equipment necessary for procedures. Reports equipment or operatory problems to the clinic charge nurse for resolution and follow up. - 20% � In tandem with RN, determines if the patient has been NPO, in compliance with pre-op orders and has an escort present. - 5% � After the patient is seated in the operatory, attaches EKG, oximeter, and noninvasive blood pressure monitor to the patient receiving conscious sedation. Records baseline vital signs, allergies, height, weight, medications and other pertinent data on the appropriate form and reports to the oral surgeon and the registered nurse. - 5% � Assists the oral surgery residents in all surgical procedures per clinical policy, including local and conscious sedation procedures. Assists the resident with airway support during the procedure. - 20% � Remains in the operatory at all times during conscious sedation procedures. Assists the registered nurse during the post-procedure phase. - 5% � Properly disposes of sharps. Returns instruments to the decontamination room. Cleans the operatory per Perioperative Services clinical policies and procedures. - 5% � Ensures the operatory is re-stocked. - 5% � Greets the patients in the waiting area. Takes, develops and properly marks and files x-rays. Cleans the automatic x-ray developer weekly. Seats patients in exam rooms in a timely manner. - 5% � Assists the residents in taking impressions and pouring study models. Assists with preparing final models for the laboratory and contacts appropriate lab for pick-up. - 5% � Demonstrates an interest in improving patient care by contributing to the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. - 5% � Participates in all unit conferences and staff meetings. - 5% | Review the physical demands and assign an overall average percentage of time this position performs these activities. These physical demands will not be listed or rated on the annual performance appraisal. Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. Certificate of attendance from an approved School of Dental Assisting combination of education . | Prefer current Certification for Dental Assistant; or must be certified within two years of employment. | Prefer two (2) years recent work experience in dental/oral surgery office practice or related work experience.
