Old Republic Surety Company (ORSC) is currently seeking an Associate Underwriter to join its Contract Underwriting Team in Orlando, FL. The Associate Underwriter training program provides the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful underwriter in the Surety industry through mentorship, in-person and virtual training. Under the direction of the local Branch Manager, the Associate Underwriter (Trainee) contributes to the functions of establishing an underwriting profit and protects against future losses by proper risk selection and underwriting of various surety bonds. Essential duties for the role are as follows:
- Other duties as assigned.
- Examine and evaluate bond submissions for completeness and risk acceptability within the parameters set by the Bond Manager and/or the home office underwriting department. Review credit reports and perform reference checks. Approve/decline submissions within authority limits. Ultimately responsible for underwriting selected classes of business within the scope of authority.
- Maintain data in accounting systems, our virtual file room, Salesforce CRM platform and other programs.
- Prepare key performance indication reports that will support the underwriting needs of the department or office. Assist in monitoring projects and collaborate with the growth efforts for the territory or branch. Present findings to management and participate in strategy review to further growth.
- Correspond with branch personnel, agents and management to collect and manage intricate details of accounts and bonded jobs.
- Analyze underwriting information, keep files up to date within multiple data systems, and keep a keen eye on file requests for specified territory. Prepare underwriting files and forms for Bond Manager and Home Office review.
- Develop expertise in all facets of the job to improve skills and reach higher levels of personal and branch performance which will enhance company profits and assist with achieving company objectives.
- Participate in regular travel within the assigned territory. Travel may include visiting agents and their customers, participating in industry events and meeting with prospective business partners. There will be learning and development sessions and shadowing opportunities held throughout the country as part of the training and development for this position.
This position requires a Bachelor's degree, ideally in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Construction Management/Technology or other related fields, or equivalent education and experience. In addition, a prior internship in a financial services setting is desired.
This position requires one to continuously have a motor vehicle operator’s record that is considered satisfactory as defined by company and/or corporate procedures, which are subject to change.
Working as an Associate Underwriter requires one to work independently and effectively within a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office products is necessary. Other skills necessary include excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and accurate proofreading skills, the ability to maintain accurate records, the ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, strong attention to detail, and the ability to use a variety of office equipment. Strong financial analysis skills and the ability to shift priorities.
This position requires occasional travel by use of motor vehicle, public transportation, and/or airplane.
