General Summary:

The Associate Underwriter will be learning and continuing to develop their skills around the process to evaluate, select and retain profitable business within assigned authority limits and under the guidance of a manager and mentor. This also requires developing the skills to partner with Company sales teams, brokers and all internal partners.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Begin to evaluate and select risk to ensure the profitable acquisition of new cases and the continued profitable retention of in force cases by developing and understanding of: Company products, the underwriting process inclusive of rate development, and the sales process and market place
• Exhibit an understanding of the sales process and marketplace influences in order to partner with the field to maximize the company’s outcome at a case level.
• Develop risk selection skills that ensure competitive, equitable and consultative decision is made on each case
• Strengthen and develop technical skills in both formal and informal settings.
• Develop an understanding and working knowledge of underwriting.
• Demonstrate effective and efficient utilization of resources to achieve desired outcomes.
• Develop skills, knowledge and awareness of tools & resources available to assist in underwriting decisions
• May perform other duties as assigned.
• With the support of the manager and mentor, consult with sales and service partners to provide the products and plan options that best meet the needs of our customers.
• Develop skills to deliver dependable, accurate and timely service and build relationships with all internal and external customers, consistent with the company’s commitment to achieving a distinct competitive advantage.

Job Specifications

• Bachelors degree or equivalent, relevant business experience
• Demonstrated ability to be persuasive and to negotiate

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$40,000.00-$72,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
