The Associate Researcher (Animal Medicine/Genetics) conducts experiments and the following techniques, including microinjection, embryo transfer surgeries, cryopreservation, animal husbandry and the development of new research protocols as they relate to the field of mouse genetics, and other projects as assigned.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Research literature in the field to further improve and optimize approaches.
- Assist in managing the laboratory space by maintaining necessary supplies and equipment and interfacing with veterinary staff and other research scientists.
- Follow standard operating procedures and maintain accurate records and documentation to comply with regulatory requirements.
- Assist in preparation of protocol applications and ensure compliance with animal care and occupational safety regulations (IACUC) and good laboratory practices to adhere to the National Institute of Health's (NIH) rigor and transparency requirements.
- Conduct experiments and collect and analyze data using various degrees of statistical methodology, spreadsheet (Excel). Explore possibilities for automation of behavioral testing.
- Perform supporting (primary) cell culture experiments and molecular biology assays.
- Assist in drafting relevant manuscripts and grant proposals.
- Responsible for maintaining the lab’s animal model colonies.
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness through actions, interactions and communications with others.
- Under supervision from the Principal Investigator (PI), develop and conduct targeted drug delivery and gene expression manipulation experiments (e.g. stereotaxic injection of overexpression/ knockdown/ CRISPR vectors/ viruses), interpret data, identify potential problems and find solutions.
- Under supervision from the Principal Investigator (PI), develop and conduct complex animal or rodent behavioral testing, interpret data, identify potential problems, and find solutions.
- As lab grows, train and supervise junior staff and trainees.
Requirements:
- Requires a PhD degree program in Chemistry, Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology, or a closely related field to be familiar with research terminology and scientific techniques.
- One to three (1-3) years of relevant post-doctoral experience.
- Requires the manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.
- Candidates who can demonstrate the ability to independently generate mouse lines via pronuclear injection and ES cell injections are preferred.
- Highly motivated and organized.
- One to three (1-3) years of post-doctoral experience in rodent neuropsychiatric disease models and gene expression manipulation methods.
- Requires familiarity with statistical and research methodology.
- (3) years minimum experience in the generation of genetically engineered mice (pronuclear and cytoplasmic injections of one-cell mouse zygotes, as well as ES cell injections into mouse blastocysts), and in the cryopreservation (and recovery) of mouse gametes and sperm.

Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $67,648.00 - $101,472.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
