Job Description
The Role:


CMC Portfolio Operations is a recently created team, designed to establish, and deploy a robust and integrated framework to enable consistent and scalable portfolio management methodologies across an increasingly complex pipeline from early development until launch.


Portfolio Management and operations (PM&O) is a new department focused on streamlined program management, processes and governance, strategic planning, and operations integration, to better enable talent development and seamless program execution.


The role of the Associate Director of PM&O will be an `integral part of the CMC Portfolio Ops team, creating the strategic infrastructure for Portfolio operations. This person will be accountable for creating and executing on strategic planning deliverables such as Clinical & Operations Planning, long range planning and budgets. The role will also include developing tools, analytics, and reporting to support the portfolio operation business processes.


This role will require a combined technical clinical development background with supply chain principles. The candidate must have experience in establishing, developing, and leading a high functioning team that efficiently and effectively achieve goals together. This individual will quickly build relationships at all levels of the organization to make well-informed decisions. We are looking for a collaborative leader who can enhance our team with their knowledge, innovation and “can do” attitude. A successful person in this role will be able to recommend, develop, implement, and support business process tools that maximize value and efficiencies. This individual must possess strong communication skills and work collaboratively in a highly cross-functional environment across CMC PMs/PLs, Technical Development, GMP Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, HR, CMC and R&D Strategy.


The role requires presence in both Moderna’s new Moderna Technology Center campus in Norwood, MA, and at the Moderna Science Center campus in Cambridge, MA.


Here’s What You’ll Do:


  • Work with CMC leadership to develop tools and mechanisms across Clinical CMC, focused on defining prioritization, identify gaps/risks, resource allocation and decision-making frameworks to ensure CMC achieves portfolio milestones
  • Translate and drive user requirements for internally developed applications in collaboration with our informatics/digital teams
  • Drive innovative approaches related to data reporting, availability and transparency based on best-practice dashboards, metrics, and other relevant reporting mechanisms
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects in parallel
  • Identify and implement best practices to facilitate standardization and coordination across disciplines, functions and/or programs
  • Work cross-functionally on demand and supply review cycle, analyzing month over month changes, and impact to the portfolio, as well as overall demand and supply metrics analysis
  • Implement portfolio analytics to review trends and metric and inform CMC decisions
  • Direct and effective project communication to ensure that all stakeholders are fully informed and knowledgeable of project activities and their status
  • Create, manage, and improve Portfolio Ops systems and tools, to enable portfolio management of CMC activities and timelines
  • Prepare status reports for project review forums and communication to senior management


Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:


  • Strong familiarity with drug development and manufacturing processes.
  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum 10 years of relevant (including clinical development program management) industry experience. MS or MBA preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of key disciplines within CMC and their interdependencies and potential frictions at each major stage of drug development and manufacture.
  • Extensive experience in building tools and business processes while applying principles, concepts, practices, and standards of drug development.
  • Skilled in data mining and developing data visualizations (in platforms such as Tableau) with a Smartsheet backbone.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal presentation skills along with a proven ability to work collaboratively and build rapport across a matrixed environment.
  • Ability to work quickly, assess fluid situations, assimilate key data, recognize key variables, analyze complex situations and make quality judgements.
  • Cross-functional leadership skills – proactive ownership, prioritize & execute, inspire creativity, drive accountability.
  • Proven results-orientation with strong influencing, problem solving, and negotiation skills that will drive accountability.
